Thanks for the comment, Maggie. I got a response from Mike Mason at ODOT, who had the reply below. He noted that construction would be a few years away:

“ODOT is currently working on a safety project on SE Powell Boulevard, between SE 122nd to SE 136th. The safety project is proposed to provide a continuous 14-foot left turn median (in the center of Powell), two-12 foot travel lanes (one in each direction), a shared 6-foot paved bike/shoulder lane on each side, and 6-foot sidewalks on both sides of Powell Boulevard.

“Currently, we are in the early stages of project development. We have just completed the surveying of the project area and will begin design of the project within the next month or two. As soon as we have early preliminary designs to display, we will be setting up public meetings to discuss the project with the community, City of Portland, and our other stakeholders.

“We understand that the Portland Bureau of Transportation has previously completed a Safer Routes to School evaluation for the Gilbert Heights Elementary area and has identified a need for curbs, sidewalks, and a crossing of Powell near 130 Ave. During the design process, we will evaluate potential crossing sites focusing on the most appropriate and safest overall location relative to the school and bus stops,

“So you take care of Powell Blvd on the west side of I-205 when are you going to do something about the east side of I-205 on Powell? There is obviously a large amount of pedestrian activity along Powell on the east side of I-205. You can see the path ground into the dirt on the side of the street. Walking along Powell is dangerous. I was almost run over by a big truck that passed on the right. Thank goodness I was not walking in the bike path area because then I definitely would have been run over. Instead I was farther over and had to dive in the bushes to avoid being run over. Driving Powell is just as bad. You sit at the 122nd and Powell signal for 5 red lights during rush hour. It is a joke. I avoid Powell like it is the plague. It is unsafe, dangerous and sucks up gasoline at red lights and produces immense amount of emissions. It would be nice if someone would look at the other end of Powell Blvd too.
