If you had read the article, you would know that Doyle did not say backing an engine is impossible but a challenge. It’s not pleasant because of the limited sight lines in back of you.

This statement is rediculous and I doubt that it accurately quotes Mr. McCormack’s statement. Steam locomotives can be backed up; it’s not “impossible” just not desirable because the tender (attached to the locomotive to transport its fuel (oil or coal) and water interferes with rearward vision. Nevertheless, backing up is how a steam locotive is backed into the stall of a roundhouse from a turntable after it has come “off the road.”

Alas, getting a story about the technology of previous epochs correct is seldom a strength of 21st Century media.
