Portland is really head and shoulders above any other city when it comes to actions like this. Congratulations to everyone that worked together on this. I was quietly sitting in the back of the room at City Council meeting this morning and was really glad to see such a collection of ethnic groups as well as us white people all smiling about something that should have been done 25 years ago. I applaud, Commissioner Leonard, the leadership of Mayor Adams and what now appears the gentle and guiding hand of Mr. Roy Jay for his efforts to be as he said “inclusive, not exclusive”. The older couple from New York were marvleous in their testimony to support this resolution. Portland did the right thing this time around and it made me feel proud that each of the commissioners including Fritz, Saltzman and Fish were all in harmony to empower. They don’t just talk about it, they actually did it. While others may have wondered why the alliance was the choice for this task, all you had to do was look around and see everyone including us white people were all there to support. It was not just because of the message, but the messenger that delivered the message. And this Mr. Williams that spoke so graciously, I found out that he serves on the board of the African American Chamber as well as the chair of Portland Community College. If there is a video of this outstanding testimony, please order it or get it.. It should make everyone feel proud that we are doing the right thing. Thanks 91ÊÓƵ for your coverage. – Virginia
