“the lantern lighting patterns will be altered monthly to reflect the historical number of firefighters who died during that month.” Since 36 Portland firefighters have died in the line of duty since 1881, I don’t think they’ll need to alter the lighting patterns for many years at a time.

Either I’m missing something, the article has got the plan for the lights wrong, or that’s a pretty lame idea.

You are correct. I just spoke with Paul Corah with the Portland Fire Department and he said preservationists met with him last month and both groups decided it would be in the best interest of the memorial to keep the furnishing there and make replicas for the new memorial. We have struck through the statement above to indicate it is not factual.

I will have more information on preservation efforts surrounding Portland Firefighters Park in a story that will be online later this afternoon.

“Certain furnishings, such as a commemorative plaque, two lanterns and a bell, will be removed from the original memorial at Northwest 18th Avenue and Burnside Street and incorporated into the new design.”

Please tell me this is NOT still the plan. I thought it was decided over a month ago not to strip mine the old memorial.
