If the Ankeny Burnside project had gone through the fire station would have been in a much less of a space and a much less of a building about 2 blocks away at Davis and 1st. While the original relocation plans appeared to have an improved building – as the costs became apparent that improvement started to fall by the way side.

I suspect – because the Journal didn’t ask – that the fire fighters as well as the administration are pleased that the move did not take place. The public received the benefit of the bonds they voted for while the proposed relocation of the fire station by PDC, without public vote, would have given no benefit to the public.

The bonds were voter approved in 1998. The Fire Department subsequently pledged those funds for the new building. As part of an agreement – PDC promised to make the fire station whole if the move never materialized. The question that I have never seen answered – was the Fire Department made whole?

Was the benefit worth the wait – 1998 – 2010? Apparently the answer is yes. But, what did it cost the taxpayers to wait?
