This situation has potential to be a win/win for the State of Oregon. One of our most successful entrepreneurs and most generous philanthropists has chosen to make another truly transformational gift to the Unviersity of Oregon. It’s not the gift, but rather the method that concerns me.

I like Regis is suggesting since it would at least give the sense of public process in the creation of this project. From Mr. Weinhold’s quote above, it sounds as if the UO Foundation – a private independent non-profit corporation – not the University of Oregon – a public unversity – will have oversight of the project. I think though the point is putting a project on the fast track because Mr. Knight has expressed an interest.

And, when it is all done, can the University decide not to accept the gift? They can do that with a car and the attempted donor can then drive it away. Once the athletic facility is built, the University will have it on campus for decades, like it or not. While the UO competitive bidding process may be more expensive than the proposed private development, competitive bidding does give the University some control. The UO should seek a legal process in which the University has a say including a veto on some details but can still skip the expensive, competitive bidding process. Perhaps the operative word is “expensive.”
