Mr. Higgins states that the topography of the rocks along highway 43 make it impossible to widen it. Mr. Higgins should visit the widening project along highway 217 between Walker Rd. and highway 26. Construction crews are carving away large outcrops of basalt to make room for new lanes.

The cost of keeping up the tracks are very expensive. This is just the beginning of dumping scarce transit money down this bottomless hole. Buses replaced streetcars and rail transit decades ago because they were much more cost effective. Some lessons are never learned when your spending someone else s money. Tri-met users only pay 20%of operating cost and none of the capital construction. The model is unsustainable. Even with all the subsidies to transit, only about 2.1 % of the trips in the Metro area are on transit. see http://www.publicpurpose.com/ut-porshare.pdf

The region purchased the railroad right of way in this corridor over 20 years ago.. allowing for a quick and easy separated transit route for streetcar.

I hate it when I ride transit in this town. There is never room to sit, what with all of the stolen HDTV’s taking up seating space.

And yes, there are tracks already in place – and a tunnel in one section – for the streetcar.

There are already tracks laid down sandwiched between highway 43, rows of houses and the Willamette. They run from downtown LO and end at South Waterfront, just feet from the existing Streetcar line.

So if Highway 43 is a problem to widen; where do these fools plan to put their choo choo tracks? Oh – and don’t forget to let everyone know how easy Lake Oswego will suddenly become to all sorts of people that love to commit crimes whereever they go on public transit.
