I’d like to see the PDC detach block 32 from this project and just move ahead with Block 33 Uwajimaya project. The two block development was planned in the brewery block era. It simple doesn’t make sense anymore to demolish an entire block of functioning buildings. The Uwajimaya project alone will be more then enough to establish a critical mass of development.

This area of town, sandwiched between the developed and active Downtown and Pearl District neighborhoods, is already flowering. I live nearby, and the area is prime for development; a surface-level parking lot has no business being right along the MAX lines and in such a growing neighborhood (the project will incorporate underground parking). I look forward to following the development of this process, and I hope our city leaders will choose to support dense, smart growth such as this. It would be great to have Uwajimaya in Old Town – though I am wary of the public investment involved. Jobs created will be mostly lower wage service positions – employees unable to afford to live where they work.
PDC would do better to direct public investment to firms that draw new income to our city – e.g. speciality manufacturing and service sectors that sell to clients outside PDX.

It is unclear why an earlier 2009 Daily Journal article on the same subject matter wasn't referenced. It provide some good basic information. “The letter of intent gives the Portland Development Commission six months to come up with the public investment required for the project.”

Doesn’t the above sentence speak to the problem of development in Portland? Isn’t it the tail wagging the dog? What is the estimated total cost? It is an economical risky investment – one that no private investor will take. What astronomical number will the public investment be by the time development plans are formalized?
