While these figures reflect the fact that certified homes typically sell for more, we’d also like to point out that this is also a reflection of perceived value: greater comfort, lower utility payments, better indoor air quality, durable materials… all these factors play into what the home buyer is willing to pay. At the same time, green homes can be very affordable as materials and equipment become more mainstream. This is one reason that in the Portland area we see a great deal of Earth Advantage and LEED for Homes-certified affordable housing, with homes available for under $200K.
