Recently I was examining an EnergyStar home, and I was not to impressed. I found that it did not really address the conditions that it would encounter in the region. In a way, I feel that LEED does not set up a viable standard for builders in the same way as this EnergyStar home did; however, I think the idea of monitoring is a good one. If we really want sustainable homes, then educating users on how to operate the home or building is needed. Having users volunteer for this study can possibly provide us with data that we really require to design better buildings.

Who would want to work or live in a LEED-EB building that requires “monitoring occupants purchasing, commuting and productivity attributes”?

Sound like an invasion of privacy and socialistic management.

Please stop with all this LEED stuff. This is not making us more productive. Spending time documenting materials that 90% of the time you would use anyways, is not making me anymore productive. Now LEED is going to want the owner of a building to spend money and provide audits every 5 years of how the building is performing, also does not increase productivity. This LEED is just becoming a bureaucratic/big government mess that is harming the building industry all in the name of being “green.” If it slows things down, if it costs more and if you need to give tax breaks in order for it to exist, then it probably should not happen in the first place.

Learn it, know it, live it.

LEED has been, from the start, a standard focused on continual improvement – so the inital standard was not as “good” as the current version, which will inevitably be superseded as more informaiton and intelligent methods of integrating that informaiton into the standard are developed. The current version is seeking to integrate performance level data through life cycle approaches and the development of the benchmark Naranjan is asking about – but given the variaty of uses, locations and building types, the set of simplified best practices that is suggested is not on the horizon. Further to that, LEED clearly distinguishes between a construction-based certification and O&M based certification in the “existing buildings” (EB) part of the standard. This calls out the underlying point in Naranjan’s post, that how you design a building and how you operate it are not always well connected – this calls out the need for a continuing focus on performance improvement and not just blindly believing in a stamp of approval. Life isn’t that easy and we are being lazy if we expect it to be.

First of all what is LEED? save energy? What is the reference bar? I mean you wan to compare with home without AC unit and carpet? In reality, we want to install giant AC units, giant refrigerator, giant pool, luxury carpet in a giant home/office and still want to say LEED? This LEED is not measurable and hence fake. Let us show us how to measure. What is the unit of measurement for LEED? How many time this LEED allow us to replace carpet? What is the limit of air journey? How many car one can own? Is there anything about saving energy in LEED?
