Living Buildings are the perfect fit for the University System. Living Buildings will be the next major advancement in the buidling sector and represent the future of architecture. A triple net zero tower has never been built and I can think of no better way for Oregon architecture students to learn about buildings of the future than by learning in them. The costs are high as they are for all new technology; they only become affordable once they become common practice. The Oregon University System, Gerding and Edlen and the Portland Development Commission deserve credit for being global leaders.

Oh and @ Bob Clark – The building has to generate all of it’s own energy onsite using 100% renewable sources- which means it can’t use natural gas – by definition.

What a waste. Generates its own electricity. Big Deal! It generates it mostly from natural gas I bet (just like PCC’s LEED project), and so isn’t much different from the electricity you get off the grid. And the cost per square foot comes out at over $400, way way over conventional buildings. At a time when university students are going deep in hoc to get schooling, it makes absolutely no sense to be spending such outrageous sums on buildings. After all, it’s not so important what goes over the student’s head as what goes into his head.

This is a shining example of what’s wrong with electing someone like David Wu, first congressional district who helps subsidize such ludcrious projects. Vote Conilles instead.
