The cost of registering with the CCB is the tip of the iceberg

NO license
Just say NO to a lot of cost
NO SS NO Tax NO Workers comp NO Liability INS and more

A license contractor pays a worker $25.00 per Hr
on a roof with a leasing co add about 40% = $35.00
the added insurance and overhead adds about $15.00 total $50.00 with no profit
The worker takes home about $18.00

The same worker takes a side job charges $25.00 per HR
Takes home $25.00 all profit the client pays $25.00 not $50.00
now how hard is that to sell

The bottom line follow the money

How about a fine of double the amount paid by the homeowner
Paid by the homeowner let the CCB keep half and rebate the other half to
lower license fees to registered contractors

Actually, it’s not the license fee that is so terribly expensive, it’s the required insurance. My husband and brother are both officially licensed contractors, but it’s tough in this economy to swing for the insurance. Yes, $260 is not that much – but insurance is a lot more. It’s worth it, of course, if you can pay for it – but for those just scraping by and trying to feed their families, I can understand why they do it. Maybe instead of hiring more police, the state could use the same funds to aid contractors who would like to be licensed but can’t afford the insurance.

Contractors are just trying to survive and yet the State finds it necessary to hire more bureaucrats to fine people who are in dire straits. I dont believe it matters whether a contractor is licensed or a structure is permitted. It certainly doesn’t make it any safer, it only generates fees to pay government agencies who are not responsible, even if they do miss something that is unsafe.
