You’re right that this development type is a nice slice of sunshine in today’s economic and construction climate.

One thing I would add is that local, mission-driven banks look like the key in terms of lending for Accessory Dwelling Units. These are “portfolio lenders”, institutions that take some of their loans and hold on to them themselves (rather than having to shop everything to the secondary market). This gives them more latitude in determining value. ADUs clearly pencil as income generators (when rented) and meet all sorts of community goals in terms of neighborhood vibrancy and compact urban form. They’re a good bet… perfect for local banks that are committed to supporting local communities in a profitable way.
