I find it interesting that a leader of the nature conservancy of Oregon Russ Hoeflich would make a comment like, ” When it snows, the trees are so dense that the snow hangs in them and never reaches the ground” Ever heard of snowmelt? I have to think that he was paraphrased. Also, it’s pretty scarry that Matt Donegan, co-founder of Forest Capital Partners, and the lead of Kitzhaber’s Forest Health & Biomass Energy Transition Team, is on Kitzhaber’s team. God help us! That greedy team just wants to cut,cut,cut. When I lived in La Grande they bought out Boise Cascade’s holdings around us and look out, the community involvement and easy going attitudes of BC were a thing of the past. Maybe, you should re-read an appropriate book by the name of the Lorax, John K. Shame on you. Biomass is another scheme that keeps running around in circles from ethanol to pyrolitic conversion of tires to fuel (big no no for investors from the board of Lewis and Clark College) toyeah, hear it is again – Biomass for the masses. Wahoo, lets just privatize everything and get rid of our forests so we can pursue our real dream of creating another community in Mars. No forests to cut there.

Excellent article.

“Gov.-elect John Kitzhaber, however, believes the at-risk forests can help the state cut its unemployment rate and beef up its renewable energy portfolio.” Somehow that statement by the good Dr. makes little sense. Just how many people would be employed and how likely would it beef up the portfolio?

And is that the priority for maintaining the forests? Isn’t this the issue? “Whether biomass is carbon neutral or not, we need to recognize what happens if we don’t treat the forests and bring back resiliency.
