I don’t know where you get leads for interviews, but I have been in architecture in Portland for 10 years. I know *many* in the same field and NONE of us has the same salary or the same steadiness we saw 2 years ago and before- we have all either lost our jobs permanently or temporarily, have reduced hours or pay or closed our offices altogether. “Steady work in 2010” is no doubt an exception.

Architecture seemed to be at the tail end of the downturn, and unfortunately I think we will be the last to recover. Humphrey is right about banks freeing up money, but it will take years to see considerable recovery, architecture included. It’s time we start considering career changes or moves and that’s unfortunate. There is a lot of unemployed talent out there.

Also, I would be insulted if oregonlive.com took my article and murdered it the way they did. The title alone shows how they misinterpreted your piece which is much more accurate and broad than architecture.

I voted no way. It will be much better for business around the country, but Oregon will suffer. The business climate here is impossible. If you look at the Census results with so many anti business states like Oregon losing relative population compared to nine or ten states gaining, the writing is on the wall. Most of that movement happened before the economy went bad. Now that it’s been bad here for years that trend and the good new jobs that might have been are gone.
