Seems like the Portland is moving along with prudence. Warranties represent a major potential liability for manufacturers, so if they say B5 is okay – that’s as far as the mandate should go for now.
I used to have oil home heating and for a couple of years switched to B20. After a couple of years the supplier said my service contact would no longer cover the fuel pump if I continued to use B20. Biodiesel has more aggressive solvent properties which can cause clogging by unlocking old contaminants. The solvents can also play havoc with seals not designed for biodiesel. (It makes an excellent, environmentally friendly cleaner, I’ve heard)
The problem is not biodiesel, per se. After all, the original fuel used by Mr. Diesel was formulated from peanut oil. All systems using the product have to be brought on board and engineered for its particular profile.
The American Petroleum Institute imposes very specific standards for fuels and oils so manufacturers can reliably design their products. I can believe home made biodiesel is a big problem – but properly prepared biodiesel is a good, clean product.

Well now –Jays Garage is in the repair business—–duh… I can’t imagine Jay or the City of Portland worried about my engine blowing up… Jay drives a gas car and the City of Portland has an unlimited budget… When you get done with this, you should start on world peace… thanks Jay, Ty and Randy
