Unfortunately, the reporter misunderstood my statement about the CCI’s recommendations to City Council. Those recommendations were not specifically about the Comprehensive Plan. The CCI made over 20 general recommendations about multiple ways communication between citizens and city government. could be inproved. This is a small but important distinction. The rest of the quote is accurate; the CCI’s recommendations were ignored, discounted or met with hostile oppostion.

There’s an upside to this nonsense. As long as Damascus continues to help our region meet our “20 year supply of developable land”, we won’t have any more significant farmland covered in needless pavement. There’s plenty of land within the UGB that has existing infrastructure for redevelopment and infill. This is the only reason I don’t suggest we remove Damascus from the UGB and downgrade their land value back to dirt.

It’s obvious from Councilor Shannon’s comments that repeated defeats of his arrogant “I am smarter then these Damascus rubes” attitude at the ballot box by those very citizens have yet to sink in and that additional changes to the personnel on the City Council are required.

For several years, the City Council and former Mayor of Damascus have sought out the worst ideas of “command and control” government from Metro, the State of Oregon, Europe and the early 20th Century and attempted to ramrod them through while ignoring the will of the very people who put them in office. It’s a common theme in Oregon these days, and one the 25 local Chapters of Americans for Prosperity in our state are in the process of stopping.
