Oh, look what Oregon has done with their planning..such a joke..the Willamette Valley where they put housing on some of the most fertile soil in the U.S….idiots…it is all about money…pretty soon we will be taking back our country from the idiots that are running it…on our nickle…telling us what to do and how to do it and then wanting us to pay them to screw everything up…people are sick of it…

Just what we need, More government salries for oregonian tax payers to fork out. Each county has a zoning/planning commision in effect to deal with growth and land use. Leave them to do there job, in there areas, and quit trying to creat bogus jobs in order to steal more money and take the rights away from property owners and hard working tax payers. The american dream is slowly being taken away by government entitys.

Decision making should be LOCAL. For too long, the citizens of this state have suffered at the hands of those who lust for power and control. Times are changing. Oregonians have learned their lesson. Centralized command and control of land use is dominated by narrow, special interests who tremble at the thought that local people might wrest control from the central planning elitists, and dare suggest that those living within a region should be the rightful decision makers for their region!

All elitists know that people in a particular region should never be granted to right to decide on regional matters of importance! It’s too… populist. It dilutes the power of the Collectivists.

This proposal seems to create more bureaucracy – not less.
As to Bill’s comment, it’s not urban sprawl, it’s suburban sprawl that plagues flatland valleys, and fly into Denver, Vegas, and lots of other cities and you can see their irreversible impacts far from urban cores.
By the way, this article is bit slanted from the get go – for example “state Republican caucus recognizes that municipalities in the Willamette Valley, along the Oregon Coast and in the Portland-metro area need to use land differently” – a more appropriate verb would be “argues” or “proposes” because “recognizes” implies the our current land use system (which looks better to me each time I cross our southern border) fails to make this accommodation. And I would like to see how ‘using land differently’ really means.

This is a step in the right direction and the sponsors should file a ballot measure to give voters the final say on this idea. The ballot measure could be a little more property rights friendly than the legislative bill and then if the legislature kills the bill, which the Democrats will likely do, the idea could go to the voters and if they pass it we could finally add some common sense to a system that has been taken over by extremists.

Do people in the Valley even have an idea as to how absurd it is to have an urban growth boundary to stop urban sprawl in the small towns of eastern and southern Oregon or to stop home development on land containing nothing but sagebrush?
