Monroe got snookered. Why didn’t any of the other state senators from Portland propose this? Maybe they realize that urban renewal on its current path will lead to restructuring police and fire pensions in 10+ years, and any politician who hopes to be around that long would get tarred and feathered then for supporting this now. He’s the weakest link in the chain – the one who doesn’t see the self-preservation angle.

“Wealth begins with schools.” Oh, that’s funny. Who came up with that? It’s a lot easier to create a tax and call that a solution than to really grow the economy around here to make the area flush with money. He probably has no idea how any of this works – they probably give him a card to read, then crank the wind-up key in the back of his head, and it talks. I wonder who the second most ineffectual moron is among the state legislature out of Portland.

How does using Urban Renewal Dollar (TIF) to build buildings with tax exempt status and non profits as tenants increase the tax base? (eg. OHSU, Mercy Corp)
