If we help schools reduce their operating costs which are often times one of the highest costs for schools they will have more money educating students and for hiring teachers. We need to help them find ways to cut costs in other places besides payroll, this is a very good start!

Agreed. We should be hiring more teachers or decreasing class sizes. Not dumping money into this.

Energy is the second highest cost for schools after payroll and provides one of the best targets to cut school costs. Currently we are just shoveling cash into inneficient world war two era boilers, ineficient lighting, and antiquated HVAC systems.The specific focus of this program/concept is retrofit aging and inneficient energy systems – not to add renewable energy like solar panels or green upgrade projects like eco roofs. Energy retrofits will save significant dollars. The program will help schools with the upfront cost of getting the new systems and equipment in place – and the schools will be able to quickly pay it back from the savings in energy expenses. With energy prices rising higher and higher the sooner we fix schools the better.

Another example of our legislators completly out of touch. Every school district in Oregon is laying off teachers, closing schools and cutting days from the schedule. Yet these knuckle heads are going to spend $150 million on green upgrades. Lets create some construction jobs and watch our kids become drop outs. Way to go Kitzhaber.

We are laying off teacher and cutting school days and we still think that its a good idea to spend money on solar panels for school buildings?
I think that we have our priorities all screwed up!
