Why not just sell the building and lot and move to a cheaper location instead of trying to find the money somewhere. Maybe they should have been saving up and planning for a renovation years ago instead of just spending money doing dozens of studies…

I guess I’m in the minority. I think some buildings have their place being remodeled and “seismically upgraded” (whatever that means when you’re retrofitting – probably would still fall down in the 9.0 predicted to hit us within 30 years) — why not just knock it down and start over on the same space or build a new courthouse on one of the numerous parking lots the county owns at the foot of the Morrison Bridge or elsewhere? Then it could really be seen instead of hidden. The LAST place I know I would want to be in Portland is inside that building during an earthquake. Maybe they could build a historic replica and materials from the old building. It’s been remodeled so many times over the years there’s not much left anyway.

this is the way to go in my opinion, got to keep this beautiful building a courthouse, we could never build anything as great as it even if there was land for another courthouse downtown.
