I served on the Ranger from 1964 to 1966 and I think it would be a great thing to save the Ranger as museum and educational center. I would do what I could to see this happen.

I can’t say it was my favorite ship, terrible things happened when I was aboard. While I was aboard a sailor died during NJP, a collision ripped off an aircraft elevator, a fire tookout an engine room, not to mention the usual deaths per cruise – people lost overboard and never found, accidents, suicides, overdoses, etc… It was coldwar peacetime, but of course we had to make our presence felt. 5200+ crew eating in two kitchens (one for hotdogs and hamburgers) 40 minute chow lines were not unusual – it was edible and kept you healthy so you ate it. Oh, and 2 dentists if I recall correctly – so if you had dental problems they got worse. Those long stays in the Persian gulf going around in circles and not doing missions and not dropping ordnance on ‘terrorists’, yeah right that’s why the muslim world hates us – for all the stuff we haven’t been doing to them. There was an air compressor on the next deck, right over my bunk and I never got enough sleep. I’d often walk the passageways at night and sometimes I still do in my dreams. Never have I felt so fortunate as when I left that ship. There is a lot of history in that huge mountain of steel. But there was a lot of history in my first ship and she was used for torpedo practice, probably has a huge grouper sleeping in my old bunk.

I would love to see this happen! What an amazing educational, community-building, inspiring, phenomenal addition to the Columbia waterfront this would be!
