We’ve written about the seismic portion of the project before:

The contractor and architect told me that the upgrade has been – relatively, at least – easy, because so much weight is being removed from the structure by getting rid of the concrete exterior and replacing it with glass. When I toured the building, they showed be the bracing they’ve installed to add seismic stability.

Thanks for the comment! Seismic upgrades are a serious concern in this city. You may know that the city code requires a seismic upgrade for building renovations over a certain amount, to address that concern.

With the 9.0 earthquake predicted to hit our region sometime in the not so distant future, is this building being upgraded to handle that? It still looks like the same skinny metal legs holding the entire thing up at this point without any cross-bracing.

All this building needed was remodel, not a rebuilt. But when you are spending someone else’s money (in this case the feds), it’s ok to spend more money to remodel than any private developer ever would do so.
