Every city has the potential to be something great it just nerds the investment and support of it’s people. I think this is a great idea, we need more development if we are to attract more businesses and people, plus the area west of the convention center isn’t much to look at, this might stir up some new construction.

Point towers are the best way to develop an urban area. They help preserve green space by concentrating development onto a smaller space of land while making economic sense for developers (more units on the same footprint), while preserving views for pedestrians and creating views for property owners and hotel customers. This is Portland’s future and it’s a great one.

The area around the convention center is already saturated with aging hotel facilities and low-density fast food eateries. I would support this new hotel is it means a few of the smaller players would close up shop, and allow for newer, denser development in that area.

Portland is NEVER going to be a mjor convention location – no matter how you try to spin the Oregon Convention Center. Bigger and much better prepared cities like Las Vegas, Orlando and Phoenix already have that business cornered and have far better facilities already in place. Even more important, where do you think somebody from Chicago or New York wants to attend a convention in January – Portland or Las Vegas?

Let Joe Weston build his hotel, and if it is successful hotel companies will be lining up to build other hotels.
