Portland planning at its best ! HA! Going to draw families – where will the children play Will they play in the 1 square block park between Lloyd Center & Max? Guess they’ll learn a lot of interesting games from the drug pushers adn pimps. No – I am NOT racist – I just work in this area and see the people in the park. When I used the restroom in Nordstrom’s this weekend 2 sales clerks were complaining about how messy it was. One actually said to the other that they can’t expect the “type” of people who frequent that area to act like people and not animals. Yes – I really want to move into this area. (sarcasm intended). Working here is bad enough. And the traffic is horrible – unless all new residents are required to teleport in and out of the region the streets will be even worse. Someone is getting their pockets lined.

Hmm, a “family” area with no parks and no place for kids to play; sounds like I’m staying in my actual neighborhood. Most likely will end up as habitrails for DINKs and empty-nesters (assuming they can unload the 5 bedroom in the ‘burbs…).

While it is exciting to see something finally happening of scale in the Lloyd district, I am skeptical of this scheme. Dropping a project this large on a fast track schedule will likely result in a neighborhood that feels generic, monochromatic and uninteresting. What the Lloyd district lacks is the finer grain, smaller scale project that are essential to great neighborhoods. Just look at the rendering – it may be pleasant to look at as a bird but there is no indication that the pedestrian realm was given much thought. And given GBD’s track record of going way over budget and ending up in court, its likely to be a mess. The fact that they apparently have an intern leading the project (at least for this article) is telling. However, introducing housing to the neighborhood may be the first step in turning this neglected part of the city around.

Ah yes, because a neighborhood has crime, we should just cut our losses and create new neighborhoods, free of any urban blight. Perhaps a bit further away? Makes sense. I hear there’s plenty of land to still be carved up in Tualatin! This tune is tired and your planning strategies completely disproven. Portland was a disaster before progressive policies set us on a path to the renewal of our now once-more thriving urban neighborhoods.

If the city puts up public money, they’re corrupt, it’s a boondoggle and the project will fail. If investors put up private money, they’re morons and the project will fail. And either way, it’s Sam Adams’ and Barack Obama’s fault too.

You really don’t have to be a progressive to comprehend that an urban core thriving with walkable neighborhoods and convenient access to reliable transit would increase density, promote private investment, and so on…

Did any of you live here pre-Pearl? Did you ever spend time there? Are you STILL calling the streetcar a failure? If so, you need to realize that you’re not actually having a conversation with anyone, save for the tiny minority of other self-important quacks that seemingly spend their days trolling the O-Live comments.

I would agree, this is a perfect spot for Portland’s next ‘green’ project. Maybe Langley should label it “Cabrini-Green”, this is the Lloyd district after all.

Seriously, what sort of nut-job developer would dump $250mm into the Lloyd district when the crime around there is out of control and the Broadway corridor is now dotted with Crticket Wireless, Supercuts, and mattress stores…not to mention the most dangerous Safeway on the west coast?

I think this is an excellent project for Portland. The Lloyd District is prime for housing and with the proximity to the newly minted “Produce Row” district and the evolving Grand/MLK corridor the location will be attractive for renters.

I do believe with the abundant access to public transportation (Streetcar/Max/Bus) and the walkability of the location that the developer should focus less on building out parking – which in turn should help the feasibility.

Since moving to Portland 5 years ago I’ve always felt that Portland should grow it’s downtown urban area across the river, which it is trying with the streetcar. This is an opportunity to exapnd the urban core on a larger scale while keeping downtown and the Pearl at a size and scale that we all like. Both can benefit from each other with their proximity.
