Before any digging people should be calling 811. Few people actually are aware of this number and the fact that they should use it before any digging.

There is undoubtedly a real danger in digging when there are gas pipes underground. Putting the repair costs aside, in the worst case scenario, an explosion could occur if naked flames are nearby. The best course of action before any digging is done is to call that number and have a testing done to see if digging is safe.
