Oregon is fortunate to have a unique legal culture that sets it apart from other states. Our legal sector is smaller than those in California, Washington, New York and other major markets, which means attorneys here – whether they work together or meet as opposing counsel – often interact frequently and respect the need for professionalism, civility and collegiality.

At the same time, the Oregon State Bar’s membership has grown over the years and the economic recession has led an increasing number of young attorneys to establish their own law practices. Many of these new lawyers do not have the opportunities for mentorship that existed in the past.

This month marks the beginning of the , which was developed by the state bar and the Oregon Supreme Court to provide guidance for new lawyers as they establish their practice.

Through the mandatory, year-long program, new lawyers who have recently passed the bar exam are paired with experienced attorneys. Together, they develop a mentoring strategy in which new lawyers are introduced to other members of the legal community, become acquainted with Oregon’s rules of professional conduct, and learn basic skills related to their practice areas.

Career development is a key piece of the mentorship plan, and the mentors will teach new attorneys essential skills such as law office management, how to work with clients, ways to get involved in public service, and the importance of work/life balance.

Oregon’s mentorship program is loosely modeled after similar programs in other states. However, our program is unique because of its flexibility and because it fosters the professionalism that makes our legal culture so unique.

In addition, the relationships that take root in the program are intended to be mutually beneficial. As new lawyers gain a support network that will help them adjust to the challenges of practicing law, we hope their mentors will have an opportunity to see the profession with fresh eyes and learn some new skills along the way as well.
