Scott | Edwards Architecture won three merit awards at the 2017 Gold Nugget Awards. The Town Center Courtyards, the Music Box residence and 10 Barrel Brewery Co.‘s new brewery in Denver were honored during a ceremony in San Diego last month.

The Town Center Courtyards was recognized in the category for Best Affordable Housing Community with 30 to 60 dwelling units per acre. The project in Clackamas was developed by Central City Concern and built by Walsh Construction.

The 60-unit complex has a brick base, cedar siding and protected overhangs. All units’ windows and doors overlook a courtyard. Multiple courtyards between buildings provide space for residents to socialize.

“We were very focused on it being beautiful but durable,” Scott | Edwards Architecture principal Lisa McClellan said.

Scott | Edwards Architecture’s Music Box residence in Portland was recognized in the category for Best Custom Home 4,000 to 8,000 square feet. Otis Construction built the home and Garrison Hullinger Interior Design handled the interior.

Designers employed an acoustic engineer to help design a house where a percussionist could practice while piano lessons take place down the hall.

“It was designed on a deep lot in the West Hills,” Scott | Edwards Architecture Marketing Director James Lee said. “We wanted to take advantage of the view of Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier.”

The firm’s 10 Barrel Brewery Co. project was recognized in the category for Best Commercial Project under 20,000 square feet. Construction firm Bergman KPRS turned the existing barrel-vault structure in Denver’s RiNo District into a brewpub.

“The beer production was front and center,” Lee said. “The keg rooms were glass. It was located in the center of the bar so people could see the process. It’s sort of a performance.”

The facility highlights the brewing process by enclosing recessed brewing tanks in glass under the floor. The 8,000-square-foot space includes a restaurant with views of the Denver skyline.

“We really wanted people to enjoy the culture of rooftop,” Lee said.

The 54th annual Gold Nugget Awards honored both U.S.-based and international architects. Scott | Edwards Architecture has won 13 Gold Nugget awards since 2009.

Portland firm Scott | Edwards Architecture is teaming with 10 Barrel Brewing to bring the tastes and architectural talents of the Pacific Northwest to the Rockies and Southern California.

The Bend-based brewery opened a new brewpub in Denver in October, and is planning to open one in San Diego in March.

“They are exciting markets,” 10 Barrel Brewing co-founder Garrett Wales said. “Some of the most educated people are in these markets. It was a natural extension of the brand.”

That brand originated in Bend, and then expanded into Portland and Boise, Idaho. The push is possible in part because of capital supplied by parent company Anheuser-Busch Inbev, which bought 10 Barrel in 2014.

“We have been a big regional player for quite a while,” Wales said. “We have always been looking for exciting markets to expand into.”

Denver’s River North Art District (RiNo) and San Diego’s East Village presented just such opportunities. In Denver, the company settled on a former bar and music venue on Walnut Street and turned to Scott | Edwards Architecture to design a remodel.

“They were involved in the Portland project,” Wales said. “They do a great job.”

Brian Mares, Scott | Edwards Architecture principal in charge of both the Denver and San Diego projects, said that working in both cities presented many of the same issues found working in the Portland-metro area.

“It was a very similar process (to that in Portland),” Mares said. “In Denver, you have to go through a historic landmarks commission to make sure the moves we were making fit within the RiNo District in Denver.”

Some of the biggest challenges involved taking an old masonry building and adapting it for modern uses.

“When we started to work in Denver, the (10 Barrel) brand had been set with the other pubs,” Mares said. “10 Barrel wanted it to be a unique pub. We took tanks and recessed them and put them four feet underground.”

The team also included a mezzanine, which required restructuring the 8,000-square-foot interior. The result lets patrons feel like they are part of the brewing process, Mares said, because they’re able to see it happen. Seats overlook brewing tanks, and patrons have rooftop views of the Denver skyline.

“We had to make a path through the beer-making equipment to the point where we modified the trusses,” Mares said. “It has a tree house kind of feel.”

The San Diego project presented different challenges. The brewpub is occupying a former cabinet-making warehouse. While the East Village isn’t a historic district, it is suffering from blight.

The changes to the building, both inside and out, are significant.

“We are essentially using the shell,” Mares said. “We are opening it up. Basically, we are making 60 percent of the façade glass. We are also doing a complete seismic retrofit.”

The transfer of 10 Barrel’s ownership to a corporation caused a small flap. The Southern California project drew complaints from the San Diego Brewers Guild president and others that “Big Beer” was trying to invade the area.

The complaints failed to halt the project, and Mares said patrons won’t notice a corporate influence on the new brewpub.

“The great thing is that (Anheuser-Busch Inbev officials) have not involved themselves in changing the character of the breweries they buy,” he said. “I feel they are very true to the brands and character these pubs have had.”
