Coffman Excavation, specializing in excavation and heavy civil projects, is known for fast-tracking complex projects while maintaining the highest level of safety and professionalism. The company has a long-time relationship with Skanska, having worked on more than 200 projects together totaling $238 million since 2002.

In 2024, the companies collaborated on $13.2 million worth of work, including the Portland International Airport Terminal Core Redevelopment and Oregon Health and Science University’s Inpatient Addition.

The excavation firm’s early involvement in preconstruction planning on the OHSU project provided valuable insights when planning logistics on a constrained site. In addition, its transparent approach to cost management and efficient work resulted in nearly $1 million in savings on the project.

Coffman has demonstrated environmental leadership by investing in filtration systems, using tier-four or higher machines to outfit its fleet, and deploying electric excavators to reduce emissions. The company consistently exceeds diversity participation goals on major projects and supports community organizations including Mercy Corps and Oregon Food Bank.

Coffman’s safety program, established more than two decades ago, has garnered multiple industry awards including the AGC National Safety Excellence Award in both 2020 and 2022.

Dozens of thefts at McMenamins‘ Edgefield Hotel in Troutdale are reported to police each year. On Nov. 9, Scott Brawner, environmental health and safety manager for Coffman Excavation, had his 1997 Ford F-250 truck stolen at the property.

For Brawner, the worst part was that the truck was loaded with donations destined for Oregon City charitable organization Bloomin’ Boutique as well as gifts for company employees. More than 250 employees had contributed to the fundraising effort.

“They asked me to bring my personal truck, and we had gifts for employees in there,” Brawner said. “There was a Traeger grill, a new TV – all of these donations, and somebody stole my truck.”

Brawner’s truck soon turned up. However, tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of goods, donations and cash were gone.

“On a good note, I put it on social media – it hit the news channels and radio stations,” he said. “It was an old-style Ford truck. I had it for 22 years and they dumped it off in a parking lot on Tuesday morning at 5 a.m. Somebody saw it on social media, saw the truck and told me.

“All the donations are gone for this, and I don’t have anything to replace it with. So we’re collecting in the office again. We can’t go out to 300 employees and try to recollect everything.”

Coffman Excavation now is reaching out to the construction industry and the general public in an effort to replenish the items that were to go to Bloomin’ Boutique. The group serves underprivileged children and those in foster care under age 18 with new clothes, shoes and other necessities.

The media attention already is spurring action.

“I retired from the fire department (Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue) a year ago, and my old union (IAFF Local 1660) is donating $1,000 for the charity,” Brawner said. “They have challenged the Clackamas firefighters union (Local 1159) to match that.”

Coffman Excavation and Bloomin’ Boutique also are partnering to publicize the effort via social media and other outlets. On Dec. 13, Brawner and other company employees plan to gather up donations and go shopping for the kids in need.

“That’s the day both fire unions are going to bring their donation checks down, and we’re hoping to get that trailer full of clothes that they are soliciting for now,” Brawner said. “It’s a grassroots effort to get some of the donations back to these kids. They clothe 12 to 14 kids a week out of that store. We have barrels at our Oregon City office. I will pick up donations, even. I will do anything I can to help out after the loss they just had.”

The 20^th annual Yoshida’s Sand in the City event kicked off Friday with a sand castle building competition at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. The event serves as a fundraiser for local youth charities and pairs corporate teams with local architecture and design firms. Castles were built on Friday and displayed over the weekend before being demolished Sunday afternoon.

A team comprised of employees from SRG Partnership, KPFF Consulting Engineers, and PLACE Studio took third place and also won the Judge’s Choice award. Other A/E/C industry participants included Hoffman Construction, Coffman Excavation, Turner Construction, and Ankrom Moisan.

Construction crews are busy doing subgrade work on the Pearl West office building at Northwest 14^th Avenue and Irving Street in Portland.  Howard S. Wright is the project’s general contractor; crews with Coffman Excavation are removing dirt from the site, while DeWitt Construction and Northwest Cascade are driving augercast piles and installing soldier pile and lagging.

The 9-story building was designed in collaboration between GBD Architects and THA Architecture for developer BPM Real Estate Group. Work on the project began this past summer, and is slated for completion in early 2016.
