Joe Yovino, a journalist with 23 years of professional experience, has been named group editor of the Daily Journal of Commerce. Yovino started with the Chicago Tribune in 1995 and has since served as a sportswriter and editor, copy editor, web editor and news editor. Currently, he is the associate publisher/group editor of 91��Ƶ publications in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

91��Ƶ’s Builder Breakfast series kicks off Jan. 31

With more than $1.5 billion in school construction bonds approved by voters in the Portland metro area in the past year, and the potential for more than $1 billion in additional projects if voters in the Battle Ground and Evergreen school districts in Washington approve two bond measures in February, the education construction market is expected to be hot for local building and design professionals for years to come.

With an eye toward helping local firms in the building industry tap into those opportunities, the Daily Journal of Commerce will kick off a new Builder Breakfast series with a Jan. 31 event. This one, on tap from 7:15 to 9 a.m. at the Sentinel in downtown Portland, will focus on the specific upcoming work opportunities for design and building professionals, as well as suppliers, via several local area school bonds.

The format will feature a panel discussion. Panelists will include:

Dan Jung, senior director of Portland Public Schools‘ Office of School Modernization ($790 million health, safety and modernization bond passed in May 2017)
Adam Stewart, chief financial officer and capital projects officer, Hillsboro School District ($408 million capital construction bond passed in November 2017)
Linda Degman, bond director, Portland Community College ($185 million workforce training center bond passed in November 2017)

Panelists will discuss the types of work they expect will be available, how to find more information on specific projects, what is required of firms to qualify for work on these projects and best practices to obtain and successfully complete education construction work.

The panel discussion is part of the Daily Journal of Commerce’s new quarterly Builder Breakfast series. The event will include networking opportunities, breakfast and a discussion on specific upcoming work opportunities. The cost to attend is $25, or $225 for a table of 10.

2017 Women of Vision award winners named

The Daily Journal of Commerce has released the names of 46 women who will be recognized in October for their involvement in the building industry in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

The annual Women of Vision awards honor women who have exhibited outstanding industry leadership and community involvement along with a strong commitment to diversity, inclusion and mentorship. This year’s winners were selected from public agencies, private firms and nonprofit organizations.

Winners will be honored during an awards luncheon that will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Oct. 10, at The Sentinel, 614 S.W. 11th Ave., in Portland. In addition to the awards presentation, the luncheon will feature a panel discussion.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is a gold-level sponsor of this year’s event.

Early-bird registration for the luncheon is $75. The price increases to $85 after Sept. 28.

91��Ƶ announces 2016 TopProjects finalists

Ninety-five projects submitted for the Daily Journal of Commerce‘s 2016 TopProjects have been selected as finalists for the annual awards competition that recognizes the most outstanding projects completed last year in Oregon and Washington.

Since its creation more than 20 years ago, the Daily Journal of Commerce’s TopProjects has become an industry tradition. In its earliest stages, the competition ranked projects based on construction values. More recently, the awards have become a true way of measuring excellence for the region’s built environment.

In order to qualify for this year’s competition, projects were required to be substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2015.

The finalists now move to the judging phase of the competition. Projects will be evaluated in several categories – including public buildings, private buildings, infrastructure, transportation and renovation – by a panel of professionals from the local building industry.

Judges will determine individual top-scoring winners in each competition category. The project earning the highest number of points among all of the finalists will be named the 2016 Project of the Year.

Winning projects will be announced during the 2016 TopProjects event, which will take place May 5 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center. Early-bird tickets are $85. The price increases to $95 after April 28. Registration is available at djcoregon.com/events/top-projects/.

TopProjects nomination deadline pushed back

To give firms more time to prepare nominations for the 2016 TopProjects competition, the Daily Journal of Commerce has extended the deadline for submissions.

The deadline originally was scheduled for Jan. 15. The new deadline of Jan. 29 will give firms interested in nominating projects two additional weeks to compile and submit packets. The nomination fee is $85 per project submitted. The fee includes one admission to the TopProjects awards event, which will take place May 5, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Oregon Convention Center.

In order to qualify for the year’s TopProjects competition, projects must be located in Oregon or Southwest Washington and must have been completed in 2015.

A panel of judges from the building industry will select winning projects in five categories as well as an overall “Project of the Year.” Winning projects will be announced during the May awards event.
