A hotel near Portland International Airport is being converted into two in one building. Construction began in June and is expected to finish next year.

The 200-room former Shilo Inn Airport hotel, currently being operated as Sojourn Suites, at 11707 N.E. Airport Way in Portland, will become two distinct hotels: Hyatt House and Mindaro by JdV (a Hyatt brand).

The project is being developed by property owner Vesta Hospitality of Vancouver, Washington. Vesta Hospitality acquired the property in June 2024 from a lender, PDX Shilo Loan Owner LLC, which took ownership in 2023, according to Multnomah County property records.

The Hyatt extended stay hotel will have 112 rooms with apartment-style layouts including a kitchen suite, living area and full closet. The Mindaro will have 90 rooms in a boutique lifestyle setting that pairs upscale amenities with a Pacific Northwest-inspired design, Linh DePledge, Vesta Hospitality vice president of brand and communications, stated in an email.

The project team also includes Skidmore AI (exterior design and architecture) of Seattle; Plante’s Hotel Renovation (interior design and some construction) of Austin, Texas; Swenson Say Fagét (structural engineering) of Seattle; AWA Electrical Consultants (electrical engineering) of Lynnwood, Washington; Bogard Pascua Engineers (HVAC and plumbing engineering) of Bothell, Washington; and Robertson & Olson Construction (general contractor) of Camas, Washington.

A $9.9 million building permit is under review for the remodel.

The full transformation involves redesigning guest rooms and public spaces, introducing new food-and-beverage concepts, elevating amenities, and enhancing the arrival experience and exterior expression, according to Vesta Hospitality. The aesthetic will reflect a modern Columbia River Corridor sensibility and align with Hyatt brand standards and Vesta’s elevated service model, Vesta Hospitality CEO and Chairman Rick Takach stated in an email.

While Vesta Hospitality could not disclose the total project cost at this time, Takach said the project is a substantial investment in the airport market.

“We feel good making that investment because how the upscale market at the airport is producing,” Takach said.

Vesta Hospitality is also developing Jawfish Restaurant, a stand-alone eatery that will connect to the hotels via a fully enclosed corridor. The menu will blend inventive cooking with elevated comfort food, DePledge stated. Inside Jawfish, a separate room with 28 seats will offer Le Petite Chef – an immersive dinner show experience.

“In that area we’re in, there’s not much food and beverage being offered,” Takach said. “We think it’ll kind of hit the mark for the whole area.”

Vesta Hospitality has worked with Mark Mathias and Ali Novinger, who closed Beaches Restaurant & Bar in Vancouver last year, on the project’s food and beverage aspects.

Jawfish is expected to open in November. Both the Hyatt House and the Mindaro are set to open next year.

A long-awaited hotel project is continuing to advance, with a public hearing before the Beaverton Planning Commission scheduled for Wednesday.

Commissioners will consider a request for design review for the proposed five-story, 121-room hotel on the Westgate property near Beaverton City Hall, at the southwest corner of the intersection of Southwest Rose Biggi Avenue and Crescent Street. The project’s designer is Arris Studio Architects.

The developer, Canterbury Hotel Group, previously told the city it hopes to ink an agreement with Hyatt to use the Hyatt House brand. The hotel will be managed by InterMountain Management.

The Beaverton City Council in December 2017 approved a with Canterbury. The city, which bought the property in 2005 for $4.9 million, gave it to Canterbury for no charge.

Design and construction are estimated to cost $23.5 million. Deacon Corp. will serve as general contractor.

According to the development agreement, the hotel will be a “five-story, high-quality, upscale lodging facility of approximately 120 rooms.” Amenities will include a “spacious lobby, lobby bar, fitness facility, business center, sundry shop, guest laundry facilities, boardroom, and an outdoor terrace with a swimming pool.”

A 3,000-square-foot restaurant space is planned on the ground floor, but a tenant has not been announced yet.

The city has been trying to develop the Westgate property, formerly home of the Westgate Theatre, for several years now as part of the Creekside District Master Plan. A 2015 development agreement with Rembold Properties to construct a two-building, 230-unit mixed-use development, a new hotel and a possible arts center on the property fizzled when Rembold backed out of the hotel portion in 2016. This forced the city to issue a second RFQ. Rembold, however, went on to develop the mixed-use project, The Rise Central; construction began in summer 2017 and is expected to finish this winter.

Development review has been requested for a proposal to build a four-story, 115-room Hyatt House hotel in Hillsboro.

Public notice of the application was published on Aug. 22.

Applicant Evergreen Hillsboro Brookwood LLC is proposing to build a 57,759-square-foot hotel on a 2.51-acre parcel at 5523 N.E. Huffman St. The site is less than half a mile south of U.S. Route 26, off of Northwest Brookwood Parkway. It is part of the Majestic Brookwood subdivision.

According to public records, Williamsville, N.Y.-based MWT Hotel & Resort Architect is designing the proposed hotel, which would have 115 rooms, a dine-in restaurant and an indoor pool.

The hotel is part of a larger development proposal for the property. At least four additional one-story commercial buildings are envisioned for the site, according to preliminary site plans. They would range in size from 3,000 to 7,300 square feet; the largest one received approval from the city in July. Plans call for a total of approximately 109 vehicle parking spaces.

The hotel would be 59 feet, 9 inches at its tallest point on the crown, with a nominal rooftop height of 44 feet.

Building materials would include “bronzestone” brick from Interstate Brick’s architectural series, metal panels and a hammered, silver metallic finish on the cornice. The exterior walls would be “canvas” colored, while the storefront would have an aluminum finish.

If approved and built, this would be the second Hyatt House hotel in the Portland-metro area. The first – a six-story, 203-room hotel in Portland’s South Waterfront District – was designed by SERA Architects and built by general contractor Howard S. Wright. It opened in September 2016.
