After making a name for itself around the world by designing iconic museums and art galleries, is coming home.

For its first ground-up, nonresidential construction project in Oregon, Allied Works will design a 20,300-square-foot, two-story creative arts center for Catlin Gabel. The private school offers instruction for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in Southwest Portland near Beaverton.

“It’s nice to do a building in Portland again,” said Brad Cloepfil, Allied Works’ founding principal.

The new building will house visual and performing arts instruction spaces and studios for students in grades six through 12.

“It’s replacing seven spaces, and adding even more room,” said Lark Palma, head of school at Catlin Gabel. “There is art 24/7 at Catlin Gabel, and this space will give students a place to do it instead of being squished into a corner somewhere.

The building will include classrooms, art gallery space and a black box theater with a sprung floor to accommodate dance classes. An outside wall will be available for film projection or art installation.

Cloepfil designed the building to suit the arts, he said.

“We tried to make the building feel raw and unfinished, so students feel that they can get it dirty and paint the walls,” he said. “When someone has the courage to make a new building for art, I want to help them any way I can.”

The distinctive roof has skylights to let light in throughout the building. Atriums provide an open-air connection between the floors, and are intended to encourage collaboration.

“We want to activate the relationships among teachers who have offices in there,” Palma said. “I can’t even imagine how exciting it’s going to be to have synergy possible through suitable spaces.”

Palma expects contractor James E. John Construction Co. to be able to start construction in spring 2012. The project’s start date will depend on fundraising.

The Allied Works project team includes Kyle Lommen, Nathan Hamilton, Malcolm Lee, and Alice Wiewel. Project team members include: KPFF, structural engineering; Harper Houf Peterson Righellis Inc., civil engineering; Hunter-Davisson Inc., mechanical engineering; Stoner Electric Group, electrical engineering; Altermatt Associates Inc., acoustical engineering; Peninsula Plumbing Co.; Delta Fire Inc.; Fisher Dachs Associates, theater consulting; and Chase, Jones & Associates, survey consulting.

The exterior will be updated with stone veneer, clear aluminum and extensive glass, and the interior will include offices, conference spaces and teller windows. James E. John Construction Co. is the general contractor and Callison Architecture is the designer of the renovation project.
