On a recent Saturday, instead of kicking back, some R&H Construction employees spent their time giving back.

The employees, their families and subcontracting partners teamed up to remodel a Northeast Portland home on National Rebuilding Day. The effort was coordinated by Rebuilding Together Portland, a nonprofit that helps secure no-cost home repairs for low-income homeowners.

This year, the project team remodeled a Gateway neighborhood resident’s home. The homeowner, Beverly, recently suffered both a stroke and a heart attack and now has limited mobility. Structural changes were made to accommodate her.

R&H employees ranging from project managers to carpenters repainted the exterior of the entire house and garage, completed an overhaul of the whole yard, constructed a new deck with stairs in the backyard, and rebuilt the front porch to allow wheelchair accessibility.

Volunteers from subcontracting partners Rogers Painting and Teufel Landscaping also participated in the effort.

“Beverly is the most deserving recipient of this project,” said Thomas Moore, an R&H Construction project manager and a three-time co-captain of the company’s Rebuilding Together team. “It is the best feeling to help someone like her. This is my favorite project I get to work on each year.”

Rebuilding Together Portland helps the elderly, people with disabilities, families with children and military veterans throughout Portland. Repairs and remodels typically include carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, debris removal and much more. Volunteers complete all the work, while a host of local general contractors and other partners participate in the program. They include R&H Construction, Swinerton Builders, Turner Construction, P&C Construction and others.

The Portland home of an elderly, partially blind woman who lives alone was substantially upgraded last month by a team of volunteers with R&H Construction. The work was part of National Rebuilding Day – an effort by national nonprofit Rebuilding Together to provide critical home repairs and upgrades for low-income homeowners. The upgrades are done at no cost to the homeowners, who are often elderly and/or disabled and unable to physically and financially complete the work themselves.

On April 28, over 50 R&H employees, subcontractor volunteers and family members went to work on the Northeast Portland home. They painted the entire interior and exterior, framed a new fence and side gate as well as a back deck and stairs, performed ADA upgrades, installed new doors, brought in new kitchen appliances, and replaced bedroom windows upstairs. In addition, multiple improvements performed before National Rebuilding Day provided new flooring in the kitchen and bathroom, insulation and vapor barrier and new upstairs ceiling, new drywall, plumbing rough-in, furnace and ducted heating to the upstairs, and new lights, switches and outlets.

All told, approximately $60,000 in materials and labor were donated for the project. The work was done in collaboration with Rebuilding Together Portland, a local chapter of the national nonprofit. Other participating industry “house sponsors” included Turner Construction, P&C Construction, Swinerton Builders‘ The Swinerton Foundation, and Viewpoint Construction Software.
