Check.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A toolbox, hammer, nails, blueprints, hardhat? For Sherwood High School\u2019s Grace Gary, a unique summer school experience involved some interesting \u201cschool supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary, a senior at Sherwood High, was offered a paid project engineer internship by Skanska USA Building this past summer. The company is building the new $147 million, 353,000-square-foot Sherwood High School that will open in 2020. It is designed to serve as many as 2,400 students.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_470\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-470\" class=\"wp-image-470 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/djcoregon.com\/skilledmag\/files\/2019\/09\/Skanska-Sherwood-2-sample-620.jpg\" alt=\"skanska-sherwood-2-sample-620\" width=\"620\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/djcoregon.com\/skilledmag\/files\/2019\/09\/Skanska-Sherwood-2-sample-620.jpg 620w, https:\/\/djcoregon.com\/skilledmag\/files\/2019\/09\/Skanska-Sherwood-2-sample-620-300x118.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new Sherwood High School being built by Skanska USA Building will hold 353,000 square feet on a 73-acre campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMost of our high school (project teams) try to do this if there\u2019s a need and a way to get it done,\u201d Skanska senior project manager Sean Walker said. \u201cWe want people who are interested in construction and find value in it and have a potential career in a craft or management or design so we can keep our industry going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary is interested in an architecture or engineering career and has been taking applicable classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy teachers recommended that I try this, so I applied,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>From initial applications, eight finalists were chosen and interviewed. Gary was hired for the summer, and finished an eight-week term on Aug. 16. Numerous tasks kept her moving nonstop, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been helping the project engineer because he\u2019s normally really busy,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve been doing anything anyone needs help with, like spreadsheets. And \u2026 I\u2019m filling in for the lady who normally sits at the front desk. I\u2019ve helped with QA and QC, doing audits of stairwells and rooms to make sure rough-in is complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skanska likely will look to hire another intern next summer, when other school projects will take place in Sherwood, Walker said.<\/p>\n<p>The experience was invaluable for Gary, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned so much about the construction process, and I think it\u2019s really interesting to see all the components that go into building something,\u201d she said. \u201cI never really thought about it until now, but at our school we do senior class gifts and it makes me feel like this is my gift to the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This story originally appeared as part of a larger story by Josh Kulla, Daily Journal of Commerce, on the construction of Sherwood High School. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.djcorprod.wpengine.com\">www.djcorprod.wpengine.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Skanska USA provides lessons in construction as it builds Sherwood High School Backpack?
