An electrical contractor in North Bend is the latest company to earn a safety recognition through the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administrations .

SHARP, or Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program, teaches employers to be safer in the workplace. SHARP status also excuses a firm’s worksites from OSHA programmed inspections while its SHARP certification is valid.

The newest company to join about 65 other Oregon firms in the program is Reese Electric.

“Gaining SHARP recognition has been quite a process and helped us focus on safety in all areas – not just project sites, but right here at our home offices and shops,” owner Randy Rema said. “All of our employees are proud of the role they have played in earning this recognition and work every day to maintain it.”

But does SHARP totally excuse firms from inspection? Participation in SHARP does not eliminate regulatory enforcement – the exemption for SHARP participants is limited. Employees retain all workplace safety and health rights contained in the Oregon Safe Employment Act.

Oregon employers that have been in business for more than one year are eligible to apply for SHARP regardless of size or type of business. To get more information about SHARP, go .

Results of a new poll suggest the majority of Portland and Vancouver, Wash., drivers would avoid using the Interstate 5 bridge if tolls were implemented to pay for the Columbia River Crossing project.

The says 77 percent of Clark County residents and 52 percent of Portland residents would take the Interstate 205 Glenn Jackson Bridge instead. The poll wasĚýcommissioned by Seattle-based insurance company PEMCO and completed by Seattle-based FBK Research.

Tolling will likely pay for a third of the Columbia River Crossing project, with early estimates for the cost to commuters being around $2.50 per car, each way. The $3.5 billion project consists of a two-span Interstate bridge with light rail, bike paths and a pedestrian bridge, as well as highway and interchange work on each side of the bridge. The rest of the project’s funding is expected to come from state and federal sources, despite current political wrangling over the cost.

Light rail, a controversial component of the project, wasn’t mentioned in the poll as an alternative to travel. Of those surveyed, 12 percent of a Clark County and Portland drivers said they would carpool more often, and only 9 percent said they would ride the bus more often. A third of respondents said they wouldn’t change their commuting behaviors at all.

The poll has a margin of error of 5 percent for Portland residents and 13.9 percent for Clark County residents. PEMCO conducts a poll twice a year on a range of topics as part of a consumer education initiative, according to the company.

The clubhouse at the Rose City Golf Course has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The clubhouse, made of brick with steep, pitched roofs, was designed by architect Herbert A Angell. It was built in 1932, about nine years after the golf course opened, so golfers could have a place to mingle. The Rose City Golf Course itself is the second oldest municipal course in Portland; Eastmoreland is the oldest.

“It was built in an era where golf was more than just a recreational game, where people came together socially to talk golf and enjoy the camaraderie of the game,” said golf pro Hank Childs. “It’s a wonderful part of the game that now isĚýrare to find, but still exists today at [Rose City].”

The clubhouse today houses the Rose City Grill restaurant and a shop named after Childs. Since the building was originally built, a rock fireplace has been added, as well as large finished beams with a firĚýtongue and grove ceiling.

Parks officials hope to use the listing to get new funds for a restoration of the clubhouse.

	SAM IMPERATI is the executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management, and teaches at Lewis and Clark Law School and at Willamette University’s MBA program. The $115 million data center is located near Intel on Northwest Evergreen Parkway. It’s a 48,510-square-foot building with 17,704-square-feet of data center space.

The energy-efficient data center was designed in partnership with Digital Realty, a company that specializes in data center real estate and management.

“The Hillsboro custom designed data center represents our commitment to meet NetApp’s specific requirements, utilizing our innovative approach to modular data center engineering, design and construction,” said Michael F. Foust, Digital Realty CEO, in a press release. “We are very pleased this data center will be an important component of NetApp’s growth strategy and long-term vision to remain one step ahead of growing business demand.

The NetApp data center is the latest completed data center in Hillsboro. Other recent projects include those for Fortune Data Centers and Adobe Systems, also on Northwest Evergreen Parkway.

The work of two Portland-area firms was dedicated last week in Boise, Idaho. The law school for Portland-based Concordia University opened this fall with 73 students in its inaugural class. Portland firm Group MacKenzie and Vancouver, Wash., firm Union Corner Construction worked on the project.

Concordia University purchased the Boise property for the new law school in 2010. The building originally was a 16,000-square-foot warehouse that the previous owner had turned into office space. That building was renovated into a law library, and a 35,000-square-foot building for classrooms and offices was constructed next to it. In total, the property spans 52,000 square feet. The cost for the project, including the property purchase and hard and soft construction costs, was about $10 million.

Since a large portion of downtown Boise uses geothermal energy, the geothermal line was extended about a block and a half to be used at the law school, according to Concordia CFO Dennis Stoeklin. The university expects the building will achieve a LEED silver or LEED gold certification.

Concordia is a private, Lutheran university with about 1,700 students on its Portland campus. The law school will serve 350 students once it is fully enrolled in two years.

She worked as a scheduler and project administrator for a large-scale expansion project at Denver International Airport. She joined Neil Kelly Co. in January 2007 as an assistant construction manager and now serves as the company’s vice president and production manager. She is the national president-elect of the National Association of Women in Construction.
Ěý	SAM BROOKSSamuel Brooks started S. Brooks and Associates Inc., doing business as Brooks Staffing, in 1981 and has since grown the company from one employee to more than 200 in six states. He is a past chairman of both the National Advisory Board for Small Business Development Center and the Portland Business Alliance. He presently serves as chairman of the 800-plus-member Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs, a group he founded in 1987.
	ANDREW COLASAndrew Colas is president of Colas Construction Inc., a family-owned commercial general contracting firm. He is a past chairman of the Portland Housing Bureau Commission, and now serves on boards for a long list of groups, including New Avenues for Youth and Oregon Business. He previously worked for West-Trend Construction, where he moved from project engineer to project manager.
	JIM McKUNEJim McKune began his construction career at Emerick Construction as an apprentice carpenter. Over the years, he worked his way up the company ranks and serves as the firm’s chief operating officer. An active member of Associated General Contractors, he is an ongoing member of the Oregon-Columbia chapter’s board of directors. He presently is serving as the 2012 president of the chapter.
	ANGELA WATKINSAngela Watkins is the small business development program manager for the Port of Portland, where she manages the port’s Mentor/ProtĂ©gĂ© Program. She also handles outreach to MWESB/DBE firms and companies and provides oversight to ensure that the port is meeting small business goals for contracting, purchasing and airport concessions. She presently serves as chairwoman of the Business Diversity Institute and the advisory board at the Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs.
