Based in Keizer, The Continental Construction Contractors provides residential renovation and remodeling services in Oregon and southwest Washington. Juan (Raul) Portillo’s work includes new construction development and both exterior and interior improvements to homes, apartments and condominiums.

Exterior services range from weatherproofing and demolition to framing, house wrap and siding installation. The company also builds decks, patios and balconies to provide clients with functional and stylish outdoor spaces. Interior services include drywall, texture and painting.

“I love doing carpentry, I love working with my hands and I love learning new things,” said Portillo, who currently is working as a sub for a large general contractor on a 26-building multifamily project in Washington. He adds that he enjoys lining up the scope of work for the independent contractors he hires for each project.

Joseph Sheets owned Sheets Construction for more than a decade before the Great Recession forced him to close. When his employer, Todd Hess, asked him to take over his construction company in 2021 so Hess could retire, Sheets hit the ground running.

He and his wife, Danielle, changed the company’s name to TH Builders Corp.; obtained their own license and insurance; took over the existing contracts, tools and equipment; and retained the Hess team.

“One thing we love the most about our work is that not one project is the same. Every project is different, so you get to learn about new clients and what they do every day,” Joseph said.

Danielle appreciates that the small ESB is like a family. “I love going to work not only because of the variety of the projects we get to work on, but also because of the people we get to work with.”

Hope Telford joined Portland-based Richard Brown Architect in 2014 and bought the firm in 2020 with the goal of creating spaces that emphasize natural materials, comfort, usability and energy efficiency.

“I’ve always been a big creative thinker and it’s been a large shift for me to move from being primarily a designer to taking a leadership role, but I love that,” she said.

The firm specializes in wineries, new homes, home renovations and ADUs, sacred and educational spaces, and commercial projects. Telford said she appreciates the opportunity to help her staff achieve their goals while also satisfying clients.

“It’s really great to see clients who are happy because their spaces turned out to be so much more than they ever imagined,” she said.

Supreme Builders, started by Eric Hernandez in 2021, specializes in residential and commercial construction, including new builds, renovations and remodels. Its projects range from single-family homes to multiunit apartment buildings and commercial spaces. Hernandez occasionally has one or two temporary employees, and most of his work is subcontracted out.

“I wanted to start my own company to have more control over the projects I work on and to bring my vision and values to the construction industry. By starting my own company, I could ensure that quality, integrity and customer satisfaction were always at the forefront of our work.” he said.

From an early age, Brad Christophersen has been interested in building things with his hands. He spent summer breaks during high school working construction and learning the trades. After graduating, he began working in construction full-time.

Over the years, he gained experience as a tradesman, carpenter foreman, superintendent and project manager, all of which gave him knowledge and perspective about how to build a company from the ground up.

Christophersen founded Standard Commercial Construction in 2022. Its portfolio includes new construction and renovations, multifamily and residential units, tenant improvements, and commercial, civil and industrial projects.

Standard Commercial Construction also specializes in all aspects of concrete, rough carpentry and installation services for doors and hardware, bath and fire accessories and more.

As a former wildland firefighter, Jarell Lambert is no stranger to hard work. He has long had an interest in how things work and how to repair them, so when people started talking to him about a career in construction he wanted to learn more.

Lambert participated in a four-year apprenticeship where he learned carpentry. With about five years of construction experience under his belt, he decided to leave the apprenticeship and start his own company last year.

“I saw how companies were run and how employees were treated. I wanted to exemplify a good atmosphere and fairness, and have some financial gain to care for the community and my family,” he said.

Sky NW Construction provides framing and finish work in residential and commercial construction, renovations and remodels as well as concrete services. As a general contractor/subcontractor, Lambert employs three people, including a co-worker from a former contractor employer.

When they met about a decade ago, Jessy Ledesma and Anna Mackay worked for different real estate development companies and found they share a similar commitment to inclusive, missing middle housing.

They stayed in contact over the years, each founding her own development company during the pandemic. In 2021, they collaborated to create Shortstack, a panelized mass timber housing product and development platform that is stackable and replicable.

Shortstack’s team is well underway on its first phase of projects, which house 108 units at four sites. These include Shortstack Mississippi, Shortstack Belmont and Shortstack Milwaukie, along with a partnership with a developer who is using the Shortstack solution.

“We love cultivating a team and positive energy within that team,” Mackay said, adding Shortstack’s work highlights creativity, collaboration and comfort. “We think there is a way to do this work that brings everybody to the work in a spirit of collaboration.”

Stanley Orr Jr. grew up in Stayton and knew from a young age that he wanted own a business in heavy civil construction. After high school, he started his career as a carpenter apprentice.

He gained five years of experience in contracting and another five years as an inspector for the city of Portland. He described the latter as “an accelerated experience in heavy civil construction work, from a different perspective, one which most contractors do not have.”

In 2021, he started Turner-based ORR Inc. with his father, Stanley E. Orr Sr., and his uncle Paul Orr, both of whom have worked in the industry since the late 1980s.

“I’m very fortunate to have such experienced and skilled partners in the two of them. Many families cannot work together, but we all work together very well,” Orr Jr. said, adding he also wanted to show appreciation to his mentor, Bill Martinak.

Eduardo Sanchez was a commercial license applicator before he started Open Sky Construction in November 2021, though his family-owned venture already had 15 years of experience and is growing steadily.

Based in Canby, his team of four specializes in outdoor features such as fences, concrete flatwork, decks, pergolas, paver patios and driveways, and retaining walls.

“I started my company because of a desire to experience new challenges and the idea of providing a better life for my family,” he said. “The thing I enjoy is communicating and getting to know different people every day along the way.”

Sanchez’s goal is simple: Deliver great results and exceed expectations. He said the biggest thing to keep in mind as a small business owner is to look at it as a marathon where failures will happen, but the successes will outnumber them.
