Now, the event is held in Vancouver, Yakima and Seattle, where it helps companies hire workers at the same time as it educates the next generation of skilled tradesmen and women. Oregon Tradeswomen Inc. hosted its 26th annual Career Fair last Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19, at the NECA/IBEW Local 48 Electrical Training Center in northeast Portland. More than 1,700 women high school students from 75 Oregon high schools attended the fair Friday, while the general public was invited to check out the 100-plus demonstrations and booths hosted by construction and skilled trades contractors and public safety agencies including the Portland Fire Bureau and Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue. The $315 million Multnomah County Courthouse project being undertaken by general contractor Hoffman Construction was given a recent burst of color in the form of an elaborate mural adorning one of the job site’s pedestrian walkways. Featuring 86 separate portraits representing jurors awaiting their duty in a courtroom, the mural was designed and carried out by students and staff at Portland’s King School Museum of Contemporary Art. Led by artist Ralph Pugay, the project was dedicated last Thursday during a brief ceremony inside the pedestrian tunnel. In this short video, Pugay explains the design and theme behind the mural. Check out this brief video from Oregon Health and Science University’s new Knight Cancer Research Building on the South Waterfront. The $190 million research center is expected to be finished later this year and will host up to 700 scientists, researchers, students and support staff. The building was designed with input from those parties, as well as contractors involved in the process, leading to a unique design that features widespread use of common spaces and open floor plans.

In this short video Gresham Redevelopment Commission Executive Director Josh Fuhrer gives a brief overview of Rockwood Rising, a long-awaited plan to redevelop a key property in the impoverished Gresham neighborhood of Rockwood. Once an unincorporated area of the county between Portland and Gresham, Rockwood has remained behind the development curve in spite of the region’s red-hot housing market. This has left plenty of room for enterprising developers to seek out public-private partnerships like Rockwood Rising, which has seen RKM Development team with the city of Gresham to make the project work.
