Work is progressing on the Cook Street Apartments, a mixed-use project on the North Williams Avenue-Vancouver Avenue corridor that broke ground last June. General contractor Sierra ConstructionÌýCo. topped out the building earlier this month, and expect to have it sealed up by August. Installation of the metal skin will begin next month, and drywall installation has begun on the building’s upper floors.

The LRS Architects-designed project will contain 206 apartments, ranging in size from studios to two-bedrooms. The building’s ground floor will feature commercial space and tuck-under parking for retail tenants, while a sub-grade garage will accommodate residential parking. The project is slated for completion in January 2016.

A new mixed-use project is under way on the booming North Williams Avenue-Vancouver Avenue corridor. The Cook Street Apartments, being built by general contractor Sierra Construction Co., will contain five stories of residential space over ground-floor retail space.

The project is due south of a New Seasons Market that was completed last year and developed by an affiliate company of Sierra, which also owned the apartment site before selling it to Seattle-based Lake Union Partners earlier last spring.

The LRS Architects-designed building’s 206 residential units will range in size from studios to two-bedrooms. Work on the project began in early June, and is slated for completion in December 2015.

With Portland Design Commission approval in hand, the developer of a 206-unit multifamily projectÌýbordering North Williams Avenue andÌýCook Street is setting its sights on construction.

After a long appeal process, commissioners on Thursday OK’d the design of a six-story apartment building that Seattle-based Sierra Construction Co. plans to build on the vacant lot south of the New Seasons Market on North Williams Avenue. Commission staffers previously criticized the planned fenestration, exterior material makeup and modern facade of the Cook Street Apartments, saying the design failed to enhance the identity of the surrounding historic area.

LRS Architects, the project’s designer, appealed that decision to design commissioners. Over the course of three long meetings, LRS madeÌýsignificant changes to the exterior. Commissioners approved that design with several amendments – eight months after Sierra Construction’s first application for design review. LRS still must apply for a type II design review of the interior parking space and pedestrian walkways; however, with this initial hurdle cleared, Sierra Construction can pursue a building permit.

“We look forward to pressing on, and getting financing in place, and getting the building permit and starting next spring,” Sierra Construction CEO Roger Collins said.
