Local charities will be on the receiving end of two events being organized by B.U.L.L. Session.

The organization, which is a coalition of business union and labor leaders, will hold a dinner and auction at the Oregon Convention Center on Sept. 14, followed by a golf tournament on Sept. 15. The group is hoping to raise $350,000 from both events to benefit Oregon charities that serve kids.

The dinner and auction, which will be held at the Oregon Convention Center, will feature items ranging from sports game tickets to travel packages. The event will begin with a social hour and silent auction at 5:30 p.m.  Dinner will be served at 6:45. A live auction, featuring long-time Portland Trailblazer announcer Bill Schonely, will begin at 7.  Tickets are $150 per person.

The golf tournament will be held  at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club, 4805 S.W. 229^th Ave., in Aloha. Shotgun starts will be held at 7:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Award ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The cost is $400 for a single player or $1,500 for a foursome.

This the 24^th year that B.U.L.L. Session has held a fundraising event for local children’s charities. To date, the organization has raised $5.2 million for organizations that have included Gales Creek Camp, Albertina Kerr Children’s Development Health Services and Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emmanuel.

Restore Oregon next month will host an event next month highlighting efforts to restore the Edwin Rayworth House, a 125-year-old Queen Anne-style cottage in Portland.

The nonprofit organization has scheduled a talk about project, “If These Walls Could Talk: Behind the Scenes of the Rayworth House Restoration,” for August 22 from 1 to 5 p.m. in Portland at an address provided to ticket purchasers.

Restore Oregon board member Roy Fox and his wife, Kim, will discuss how they e from demolition by moving it two years ago from North Portland’s Boise neighborhood to nearby Piedmont. Work is under way on a project to fully restore the house at its new location.

Industry professionals will be available during the event to talk about topics such as repairing the home’s windows, plaster work, color choices and kitchen design. Restore Oregon staffers will also discuss options for saving older homes from demolition and answer historic preservation questions.

Tickets to the event are $15 for Restore Oregon members and $18 for nonmembers. Food and refreshments will be provided. Participants must be 21 or older.

A series of panel discussions that kicks off next month in Portland will examine the theme of creating sustainable infrastructure.

Panelists will discuss in three upcoming events the effects of climate change on the region’s infrastructure and how investments in sustainable energy, water, transportation and waste management can address environmental issues and foster livable communities. The series “Infrastructure Crisis, Sustainable Solutions,” is hosted by the Urban Land Institute Northwest, Metro and The Evergreen State College’sCenter for Sustainable Infrastructure.

The event series stems from efforts by Metro officials to encourage community discussion about future infrastructure development in the Portland-metro region, said Noah Siegel, a Metro policy adviser.

“We have all these needs,” he said. “We’ve been trying to reframe the question of what do we imagine in the community?”

The first panel discussion, “Maximizing Community Wide Value Across Our Infrastructure Investments,” is scheduled to take place on July 15 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, 2250 S.E. Water Ave.  Registration will start at 4 p.m., followed by the panel discussion from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Networking and food will be served from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The event will focus on ways that a large infrastructure investment, such as TriMet’s Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail project, can address various community needs, Siegel said. Panelists include Liz Kelly, vice president of CH2M; Dave Unsworth, TriMet director of capital projects; and Todd Vogel, managing director of the Loom Foundation. Group AGB Ltd. principal Andre Baugh will serve as moderator.

The cost of the event is $15 for Urban Land Institute members and $20 for nonmembers. Ticket prices cover the cost of food and drink served during the event.

Dates and locations for the next two panel discussions in the series are still being determined, Siegel said. A discussion titled “The History and Future of Disruptive Infrastructure Technologies” will likely take place in September and examine how modern technology has affected infrastructure systems. The third and final event in the series, “Fair and Sustainable Funding Sources for Whole System Solutions,” will likely take place before the end of this year, he said. The panel discussion will explore ways to maximize community investments in infrastructure.

The Construction Specifications Institute‘s Portland chapter will host a forum this month for architects, engineers and contractors to discuss innovations in the industry.

The 2015 Industry Forum, “Art by Design,” will take place on May 12 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Portland Art Museum, 1219 S.W. Park Ave.

The event will feature a series of short presentations by industry professionals and students and networking opportunities, said Qatanna Palioca, a spokeswoman for CSI Portland. It will also include a trade fair with exhibits hosted by architecture, engineering and construction firms and construction and design technology companies.

“We’re really focusing on the art by design concept (and) what’s new in the industry and technology,” Palioca said.

Shohei Shigematsu, a partner with the Dutch architecture, urbanism and cultural analysis firm OMA, will give the forum’s keynote address starting at 7:15 p.m. He leads OMA’s New York office and is responsible for the firm’s operations in North America. Recent projects he’s contributed to include the Miami Beach Convention Center, a tower in Sao Paulo, Brazil and a new civic center master plan in Bogota, Columbia.

The cost of the event is $25 for professionals or $10 for students, although many of the forum’s sponsors are still giving away free tickets, Palioca said.

Portland State University this week will host two lectures on sustainable design as part of the School of Architecture‘s Sustainable Structures Symposium.

Stefan Behnisch, founding partner of Stuttgart, Germany-based Behnisch Architekten, will give a free lecture on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Room 212 of Shattuck Hall, on Southwest Broadway between College and Hall streets. Behnisch is known for an innovative approach to sustainable architecture, including designs of the Allston science complex at Harvard University and the John and Frances Angelos Law Center at the University of Baltimore.

Behnisch Architekten is partnering with SRG Partnership on the design of a 100,000-square-foot renovation and expansion of PSU’s School of Business Administration.

Behnisch’s lecture will kick off the Sustainable Structures Symposium, which takes place on Thursday and Friday. The event will explore the greater role that structures should have in the design, impact and operation of green buildings, said Corey Griffin, PSU assistant architecture professor and symposium chairman. Presentations will cover topics including life cycle analysis, innovative wood structures and sustainability education, he said.

Architect Michael Green and engineer Eric Karsh will give the symposium’s keynote lecture about high-rise wood-frame buildings on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Ecotrust‘s office, at 721 N.W Ninth Ave. Green and Karsh, both based in Vancouver, British Columbia, are authors of a pertinent case study.

“Michael and Eric are both strong advocates for using wood for taller buildings versus concrete and steel,” Griffin said.
