While many building owners are trying to renovate their 1960s architecture, those at Oregon Health and Science University wanted to preserve theirs.

In Line Commercial Construction recently wrapped up a seismic renovation at Oregon Health and Science University’s west campus administration building. Originally, In Line planned to strengthen the building’s tapered, exterior columns with carbon fiber wrap, a material used to strengthen a building. But officials decided that the carbon fiber would alter the building’s look. Instead, In Line poured interior concrete shear walls between the columns, which strengthened the building while preserving its architecture.

“It ended up being less expensive to do the shear walls than the wrapping,” said Kurt Meeuwsen, a project manager with In Line. “We’re hoping to do another seismic upgrade on the west campus once the college is done studying it.”

The project at the west administration building cost about $530,000. In Line is also installing 37 new patient lift machines at OHSU’s main campus.

The architect for the project is SRG Partnership.

How to help

to the Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation for My Little Waiting Room.

For more information on Providence St. Vincent Medical Foundation, call 503-216-2227.

Patients can schedule a day care appointment at My Little Waiting Room by calling 503-216-6597.

Amy Paterson could go to a community center or a gym or even a grocery store and leave her 2½-year-old son, Jonah, at the drop-in day care. But she couldn’t go to the doctor’s office and do the same.

And after Paterson was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, she was going to the doctor’s office a lot – 144 times in one year. “It’s just an added stress, on top of everything else, to always be worrying who’s going to take care of my child,” she said.

At the suggestion of friend Melissa Moore, Paterson explored whether those drop-in day cares would work in a clinical setting. “I said, ‘That’s a great idea; let’s do something about it.’ ”

They did. After three years’ effort, My Little Waiting Room is set to open at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center on Southwest Barnes Road next month. The day care allows parents to drop off their children while they undergo treatment.

Especially with an anticancer regimen, the schedule can stretch even a family with resources, said Amy’s husband, Justin, marketing director at Co. “When you do the type of treatment that involves both radiation and chemotherapy, it’s not something you can arrange ahead of time,” he said.

“We were lucky that we had an income and some local family members, but even with that, it’s a real struggle,” he said, “like trying to buy an hour and a half of child care in the middle of the day. No one’s sitting around looking for an hour and a half of work.”

While the appointments were usually short, Amy Paterson said, they were not child-friendly. “You’re dealing with highly toxic drugs,” she said. “Even the nurses wear protective gear.

“The chemotherapy room is a very sensitive setting, and it’s kind of a scary place,” Paterson said. “For an adult, it’s hard to wrap your mind around; I couldn’t even reconcile with myself what was going on there.”

Even patients with less intense treatments can benefit from My Little Waiting Room, said Todd Duwe, vice president of , the project’s general contractor. At a dedication ceremony for the center last week, Duwe’s daughter, Taylor, cheerfully explored the amenities.

The 1,200-square-foot facility features a nursery, lounge chairs, tables and a video area. There are donated books and coloring books, toys, art supplies and games. Curved track lighting lends a whimsical touch, Duwe said, and bamboo-finish Marmoleum floors give a warm look.

Taylor hadn’t been so cheerful a few hours before visiting the center, Duwe said. “My wife had a doctor’s appointment earlier that day and had to wait an hour to see the doctor, and she had Taylor with her.

“Taylor loses her patience after so long, and it’s hard to concentrate on your health-care needs when (Taylor’s) kicking and screaming.”

In Line donated 10 percent of its costs for the $88,000 project, and its subcontractors donated time as well, Duwe said.

The My Little Waiting Room concept could spread to other hospitals, Paterson said, although she’s not sure what her involvement might be. “We’re just focusing on the now and making this first center work really well.”

With all the work lining up support and seeing the project to completion, even after aggressive cancer treatments, Paterson said the effort didn’t drain her. “I was on medical leave from work, and I had very low energy, but it was something I could work on as I felt good.

“It was very healing. It was empowering. It’s very disempowering to be diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.”

Now that Amy Paterson is in better health, her husband can rib her about the time she spent bringing My Little Waiting Room to reality. “The big joke in the family is that I certainly skipped a lot of homemade lasagna in favor of little white cardboard takeout boxes,” he said.
