Centennial Place, an affordable housing development in Southeast Portland, received the top award 鈥� Project of the Year 鈥� during the 91视频’s annual Top Projects event at the Oregon Convention Center on Thursday.

Entrants were among the top projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2023. This year, the event format changed 鈥� categories were eliminated. Instead, 50 general award winners were selected to honor the best of the best.

Centennial Place, at 3800 S.E. 164th Ave., embodies a holistic approach to community development, according to the Top Projects submission. Residents are supported by a resident services coordinator and have access to Cascadia Health’s mental health, primary care, addiction recovery and wellness services.

The complex includes 52 apartments for households earning up to 60 percent of the area median income and 18 apartments for households earning up to 30 percent of AMI.

The development attained platinum-level Earth Advantage multifamily certification. Crews installed a 75-kilowatt solar array and a drain-water heat recovery system. Two on-site drywells manage 100 percent of the site’s stormwater. Other sustainable measures include Energy Star appliances and lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, efficient heating and cooling via mini-splits, an electric heat pump domestic聽hot water system, natural daylight from windows that exceed code requirements, and a high-performing building envelope.

Clear signage, communication and consistent adherence to safety guidelines resulted in zero injuries during construction.

The Centennial Place project team included: owner/developer Cascadia Health,聽owner’s representative Housing Development Center, architect and interior designer Scott Edwards Architecture, engineers ABHT, Janet Turner Engineering and Interface Engineering, and general contractor Colas Construction.

The People’s Choice Award, voted on by event attendees, went to the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center expansion and remodel. Its project team included: owner/developer Asante Health, architect and interior designer HDR, engineers Mazzetti and PCS Structural Solutions, and general contractor Andersen Construction.

A new award, Subcontractor of the Year, was given to Karvonen Sand & Gravel of Battle Ground, Washington. Each project submitter was asked to nominate a worthy subcontractor, and the Southwest Washington company received the most nominations.

Judges for this year’s competition were Garrison Hullinger, founder and principal designer of Studio Garrison; Patrick Kessi, founder and CEO of Artis (formerly PHK Construction); Brian Peters, co-founder and managing principal of Woodblock Architecture; and Jeff Schnabel, architecture professor in the College of Arts at Portland State University.

Spectrum Woodworking was the event’s first drink sponsor. Green Mountain Fabrication was the honoree sponsor. The Daily Journal of Commerce has named 84 finalists for the 2022 TopProjects awards competition recognizing the most outstanding projects completed last year in Oregon or Southwest Washington.

Since its creation more than two decades ago, TopProjects has become an industry tradition as a way to measure excellence in the region’s built environment. Eligible projects were required to be substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2021.

The finalists now move to the competition’s judging phase. Projects in 15 categories will be evaluated by a panel of professionals from the local building industry. Judges will determine the individual top-scoring entry in each competition category. The project earning the highest number of points among all finalists will be named Project of the Year.

Skanska USA Building teamed with SRG Partnership and Behnisch Architekten to complete a 147,000-square-foot refurbishment of Portland State University’s existing Graduate School of Education and School of Business Administration in downtown Portland.

The $50.223 million project included renovations to the Karl Miller Center as well as a new 36,000-square-foot pavilion. A visually captivating glass atrium connects the two.

The project targeted LEED Platinum certification. The Karl Miller Center features a modern, cantilever design, the complexity of which posed plenty of challenges for the project team. Close collaboration and strong communication allowed the project team to successfully complete the project, despite having to conduct construction while classes were in session. Unusually harsh winter conditions also required Skanska and its subcontractors to turn to innovation and get creative in order to deal with unusually heavy rains and freezing temperatures.

A close working relationship also allowed the project team to help PSU reach its goals for sustainability. Features such as a green roof and a series of filtering planters and high-performance walls and windows resulted in the project earning LEED Platinum status.

The project was completed in time for the beginning of the fall 2017 term, earning praise from administrators from PSU’s business school.

鈥淓ven with a myriad of challenges, the construction crew and subcontractors were professional and attentive 鈥� no small feat as the building was also occupied with over 4,000 students on the last day of the project,鈥� Cliff Allen, dean of the business school, wrote in a letter of recommendation for the project.

The Daily Journal of Commerce has opened the door for nominations to be submitted for its 2018 TopProjects Awards.

The awards, heading into their 23rd year, honor the best public and private buildings, renovations and transportation projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

In order to be considered for the awards, projects must be substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2017, and valued at $1 million or more.

The TopProjects awards have become an annual industry tradition, beginning in 1996. At first, projects were ranked by construction costs. However, in recent years, the event has evolved into a true competition, with nominated projects evaluated by a jury of local architects, engineers, contractors and developers.

This year, projects selected to move forward to the judging portion will be announced on March 5, 2018.

Winning projects in individual categories 鈥� along with the 2018 Project of the Year and People’s Choice winners 鈥� will be announced during an event at the Oregon Convention Center on May 17, 2018.

The deadline to submit nominations is Feb. 16, 2018. Nomination forms and entry requirements are available online at /events/top-projects/. The entry fee, which includes a ticket to the awards event, is $100 per project.

Registration for the awards event will open on Feb. 19, 2018.

Over 30 projects completed in 2016 in Oregon and Southwest Washington were honored, with the Sellwood Bridge project taking the top honor as Project of the Year. More than 600 people gathered at the Oregon Convention Center Thursday evening to help the Daily Journal of Commerce pay tribute to more than 30 outstanding projects completed in 2016 in Oregon or Southwest Washington.

The annual TopProjects competition, now in its 23rd year, is regarded as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most popular building industry events. This year’s competition drew more than 95 entries in 10 categories, including new construction of private, public, mixed-use and multifamily buildings, infrastructure and transportation projects.

The replacement of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland was named the 2017 Project of the Year. The honor is given to a project that earns the highest overall score in the competition. In giving the project an almost perfect score, judges gave nods to the project team, including general contractor Slayden-Sundt Joint Venture, T.Y. Lin International Group and project owner Multnomah County, for an outstanding effort coordinating many components, using DMWESB subcontractors effectively and tapping innovative solutions to overcome challenges.

Another submission, Albina Yard, received the Publisher’s Choice Award for outstanding innovation and overall excellence. The project, submitted by LEVER Architecture in conjunction with project owner Reworks, is the first office building in the U.S. to use domestically sourced cross-laminated timber.

This year’s overall People’s Choice Award went to Daimler NOVA, which also won the People’s Choice Award in the category of private new construction.

The event also featured the presentation of Energy Trust of Oregon’s High Performance Building Awards. The Oregon Zoo Conservation Education Center won for new construction, while The Abigail and Beaverton Middle School received honorable mention. Pine Street Market won for major renovation, and Portland Community College’s campus bond projects received honorable mention.

The Daily Journal of Commerce has named more than 90 finalists for the 2017 TopProjects awards competition recognizing the most outstanding projects completed last year in Oregon and Washington.

Since its creation more than two decades ago, TopProjects has become an industry tradition as a way to measure excellence in the region’s built environment. In order to qualify for this year’s competition, projects were required to be substantially completed by Dec. 31, 2016.

The finalists now move to the competition’s judging phase. Projects in several categories 鈥� including public buildings, private buildings, infrastructure, transportation and renovation 鈥� will be evaluated by a panel of professionals from the local building industry.

Judges will determine the individual top-scoring winner in each competition category. The project earning the highest number of points among all of the finalists will be named the 2017 Project of the Year.

Winning projects will be announced during the 2017 TopProjects event, which will take place May 18 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oregon Convention Center. Early-bird tickets are $85. The price will increase to $95 after May 2. Registration is available at djcoregon.com/events/top-projects/.
