The University of Western States has completed its move to a recently renovated office building in Northeast Portland.

The private integrated health sciences university, best known for chiropractic education, has relocated to 8000 N.E. Tillamook St. The campus centers on a 152,575-square-foot building that formerly served as Banfield Pet Hospital’s headquarters.

The University of Western States had planned to reopen for the spring quarter beginning on April 6. Instead, the school has shifted all classes online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Despite the global pandemic, we succeeded in meeting our timeline and completing this complex relocation,” Dr. Joseph Brimhall, president of UWS, stated in a news release. “I am proud of our team for accomplishing this historic move in the midst of challenging circumstances. This campus relocation enhances opportunities for collaboration with other institutions and community partners, and fosters a healthy and sustainable center for generations.”

The superblock building on 82nd Avenue was constructed in 2006. It was purchased for $25 million in February 2019 by W.P. Carey Inc., a publicly traded real estate investment trust based in New York City, according to public records.

The building received substantial work last year, permits show. An $11.68 million alteration permit was issued for tenant improvements in April 2019. Work included reconfiguring first-floor treatment rooms and reworking second-floor rooms to create executive offices and upgrade accessible restrooms. The parking lot was also reworked; new islands were cut into the lot and associated site work was conducted.

Architect Eric Lanciault designed the project; Precision Construction Co. served as the contractor.

The 116-year-old university previously operated at 2900 N.E. 132nd Ave.
