91视频 Oregon held its annual Women of Vision event on Thursday at the Sentinel in downtown Portland. More than 300 people gathered to recognize 46 women in the architecture, engineering and construction industries who have made their mark within their companies and their community through volunteer work and mentorship. 91视频 has recognized more than 430 women since the WOV event began in 2014.

This year’s Lois Cohen Lifetime Achievement Award went to Alison Davis, who is celebrating her 25^th year as executive director of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Oregon. The Oregon chapter boasts 120 member firms representing about 5,000 employees. Davis said she has seen more women joining the organization and the industry as a whole, noting that reaches to top leadership positions in ACEC member organizations across the country and at the national level.

Tonya Finley, ACEC Oregon president and manager of contracts and risk management at David Evans and Associates Inc., said Davis 鈥渨orks tirelessly to address the needs of our industry, not only in the state of Oregon but she is known at the national level as an expert in her own right.鈥�

The Jean Richardson Industry Impact Award was presented to Anne Monnier, a partner with KPFF Consulting Engineers. Monnier started her career at KPFF in 1993 and was named a partner in its Portland office in 2009. She was the first female KPFF owner in the Northwest. Her most prominent projects have accumulated more than 60 awards through 29 individual projects. Monnier has worked with two of KPFF’s leading women engineers to create the Women in Structural Engineering (WiSE) group, which now has expanded beyond KPFF’s Portland Structural Division to other offices and is growing to include other women professionals in the Portland A/E community.

New this year is the 91视频 Women of Vision Circle of Excellence Award. This honor is given to past Women of Vision honorees who continue to make their mark in the AEC industry. This year’s recipients were Tiffani Penson, People and Culture manager for the city of Portland; Melynda Retallack, principal and owner of Ink Built Architecture; Jessie Steiger, senior project manager at Klosh Group Inc.; and Kathleen Stuart, founder and CEO of Stuart Collective.

This year’s 46 Women of Vision honorees are project managers, CEOs, principals, company founders and more. Their dedication to their companies, the community and to mentoring young women is an example for all to follow. This year’s honorees were:

Girls Build is a week-long summer camp founded in 2016 by Portland carpenter Katie Hughes. The camp offers girls between the ages of eight and 14 the opportunity to learn trade skills hands-on, from wiring solar panels to shutting off a broken water main. With the support of the local building industry, the popular camp has expanded to include sessions in southern Oregon, Astoria, and Seattle.

A personal and professional crossroads led Thuy Tu to an introspective period in 2013 that she calls a very transformative time in her life.

鈥淚t was just an interesting junction in my life and I soul searched,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 got to travel and took a lot of road trips with my Chihuahua, Uma. I read a lot and I did some deep meditation. That was a defining moment and what came out of it was my firm.鈥�

Tu, who has more than 20 years of experience in transportation and transit planning, urban planning, capital improvement projects and environmental planning, started Thuy Tu Consulting LLC in 2015. Her services integrate project management, public involvement and government policy.

Tu’s personal experience of growing up near Southeast 82^nd Avenue proved invaluable as she served as a planning consultant for the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Avenue of Roses Project. Tu, who also speaks Vietnamese and is on the steering committee for the Jade District, helped refine the survey methodology and interview approach with local residents.

She also co-taught an urban design studio with University of Oregon students about how to transform the avenue’s transportation corridor. 鈥淭he students’ work went viral and the community asked me to bring it before the City Council, so in July I led a town hall meeting for Mayor Wheeler and the City Council. The town hall was a very successful meeting, and perhaps that was because I brought everybody together and it was community led,鈥� she said.

Tu recently began teaching a course on community resiliency and earthquake engineering at the University of Portland, and she serves on Portland’s Urban Forestry Commission. She said she appreciates the opportunity to help influence change, noting, 鈥淚’m not passionate about one particular thing. I’m passionate about the integration of everything together.鈥�

Tu, who also received a 2017 Building Diversity award from the 91视频, describes her life as a series of serendipitous events that have led her to a perfect fit in her career.

鈥淭he reward is being able to influence change with the wisdom, love and integrity that I learned during my introspective time,鈥� she said. 鈥淭he community can take hold of that and know that what I do isn’t just a job. It’s what I love to do.鈥�

The Daily Journal of Conference held the second annual Women of Vision conference and awards Thursday at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. The conference featured a morning of sessions focusing on leadership skills for women involved in the building industry, which took place in conjunction with a luncheon honoring the winners of the 2015 Women of Vision Awards.

The awards recognized 25 outstanding women in Oregon and Southwest Washington who are involved in architecture, engineering and construction as well as in fields related to the building industry.

With a decade of experience in human resource management with Honeywell and Welch Allyn, Lena Ulvi joined the executive management team at Skanska in 2012. She immediately went to work on progressive ideas, co-founded the Skanska Women鈥檚 Network, an employee resource group focusing on the needs of women. The network provides all of the women employed at Skanska, one of Oregon鈥檚 largest general contractors, with opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and professional and personal balance methods.

Ulvi鈥檚 perspectives on diversity have been a key element in her firm鈥檚 growth.

鈥淪kanska is a very progressive company,鈥� she said. 鈥淚n an old-fashioned industry, diversity is often a struggle. We’re addressing that, and it’s working.”

Ulvi has helped revive Skanska鈥檚 community service committee in the company鈥檚 Portland office and worked to increase community outreach. Efforts include involvement with Rebuilding Together Portland, an organization bringing volunteers and local communities together to improve the lives of low-income homeowners by assisting with maintenance and rehabilitation of homes and upgrades to make them more livable for seniors and disabled individuals. The Skanska committee also is involved with the Oregon Food Bank and SOLVE, and Ulvi serves as co-chairwoman of the human resources management committee for the latter group, which is an environmental nonprofit.

Ulvi has been active with Skanska鈥檚 Young Professionals group, providing mentorship, training and guidance for the company鈥檚 young employees. She restructured the annual employee survey to improve input from employees regarding their concerns, and the results have led to significant organizational changes. She recruited and hired more than 70 employees in a very short timeframe for a $500 million construction project. She created a scholarship program for Portland State University and University of Portland students, including a 12-week summer internship program in project engineering. She spearheaded a new program to improve new Skanska employees鈥� integration into the company and improved the firm鈥檚 employee forecasting for more efficient recruiting.

Ulvi has been a PSU Graduate School of Business mentor since 2009.

She appreciates the need to build relationships both outside the office and within her professional capacity.

鈥淎t the end of the day, it鈥檚 facilitating, connecting the dots, talking with people at all levels to determine how we improve, how we continue to be diverse and solve problems more directly,鈥� she said.
