OREGON 250 |

Garth Bachman

Organization
IBEW Local 48
Title
Business Manager

Over his 36-year career, Garth Bachman has developed a leadership philosophy that centers on complete honesty with his union鈥檚 membership.

鈥淚t does no good to lie or skirt around the truth. If you made a mistake, tell the membership you made a mistake,鈥 he said, adding it also helps to be a bit stubborn, know how to say 鈥渘o鈥 and not be afraid of confrontation.

Bachman considers his greatest career accomplishment to be repairing IBEW Local 48鈥檚 pension plan, which was only 78 percent funded when he took over. Five years later, it is now 100 percent funded and enhanced by improved benefits.

鈥淚 want to see everything we have be better for the next generations. I want to eliminate some of the problems that I saw in my years in the electrical industry so future generations don鈥檛 have to see some of that,鈥 he said.

Bachman鈥檚 professional affiliations include serving on the Oregon State Building and Construction Trades Council and as a vice president for Oregon AFL-CIO.
