Joshua Checkis, leader of Glumac鈥檚 Portland office, has spent 18 years building a career focused on sustainable engineering and community impact. Throughout his professional journey, he has emphasized mentorship and organizational development, working to cultivate talent within his firm while extending expertise beyond company walls.

Checkis has maintained active involvement with numerous professional and philanthropic organizations. He has supported Cascadia, ASHRAE, ACE Mentorship, SCUP, and A4LE through contributions of time, resources, and technical knowledge. His community engagement extends to organizations including Peace for Paul, Providence Heart of Gold, Portland Backpack, and Portland Sustainable Building Week, along with various public and private foundations.

His leadership philosophy centers on developing human capital and ensuring knowledge transfer across generations of professionals. Checkis explained that success means watching others pass along the expertise they have gained. He continues advancing sustainable building practices while maintaining his commitment to mentorship and community service, focusing efforts on maximizing public benefit through strategic engagement.

In 1990, Peter Coffey and colleague Randy McCourt left DKS Associates鈥� Oakland office to open an office in Portland 鈥� the firm鈥檚 first outside of California.

Coffey joined DKS Associates in 1985 after earning his bachelor鈥檚 degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University. He spent more than three decades 鈥� his entire career 鈥� with DKS and served as the office manager for both the Oakland and Portland offices as well as a board member and principal-in-charge of some of the firm鈥檚 most prominent projects. In 2017, Coffey succeeded McCourt as the company鈥檚 president and chief executive officer.

Over the course of his career, Coffey played pivotal roles in various transportation improvement projects, with extensive expertise in traffic engineering and sustainability, project management and operational enhancements. His leadership at DKS Associates focused on long-term strategic development and fostering essential relationships both inside the organization and outside.

Chris Maciejewski took over as DKS Associates鈥� president and CEO in October; Coffey retired at the end of November.

Luke De Hayr brings more than 25 years of diverse management and consulting experience to his role as leader of Stantec鈥檚 Environmental Services group. He has held project and leadership roles around the world in areas such as sustainability, regulatory compliance, permitting and natural resource damage assessment.

De Hayr鈥檚 career has taken him to such countries as United Arab Emirates; Papua New Guinea; Jordan; Oman; Nigeria; and Kenya. He is a native Australian but settled in North America in 2010 and became a U.S. citizen in 2022.

By working on many high-profile projects, De Hayr has developed a deep understanding of the environmental, regulatory and cultural nuances that shape successful projects. He takes pride in bringing together the right teams, across disciplines and geographies, to facilitate robust and seamless project delivery for Stantec鈥檚 clients.

He draws on his understanding of business drivers and cultural influences in the workplace to streamline team collaboration and conflict resolution, with the overarching goal of delivering innovative, sustainable solutions to complex environmental challenges.

Since joining KPFF in 1998, Matt Dolan has watched the company double its local staff and grow to 1,500 firmwide while maintaining the sense of community and purpose that defined it from the beginning.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had the privilege to contribute to landmark projects across the region and the world, but what stands out most to me is seeing our people build careers, develop their own areas of expertise and pursue projects they鈥檙e passionate about. That collective success is what I consider the real accomplishment,鈥� he said.

Dolan sees his leadership role as setting a clear direction, removing barriers and giving people room to bring their best ideas forward.

鈥淚鈥檓 driven by curiosity and have learned something new on every project. It never gets old, solving challenges and collaborating with smart, passionate people,鈥� he said. 鈥淪uccess, to me, comes from staying grounded in our core values, supporting each other鈥檚 growth and never losing the excitement for what鈥檚 possible.鈥�

A member of several professional and community organizations, Dolan supports KPFF鈥檚 participation in mentoring programs, advisory boards and community organizations.

Tracy Ellwein, throughout her 30-year career, has worked as a consultant focused on transportation and infrastructure projects across the U.S. She navigated the career ladder from serving as a design engineer to taking on field assignments, leading teams and projects, and now large, diverse operations.

Ellwein leads HDR鈥檚 operations for transportation, water, power and building engineering services, collaborating with a team of 250 professionals in Oregon and Southwest Washington. She has been involved in several levels of HDR leadership development programs, providing mentorship to younger staff and sponsoring emerging leaders.

As a national director for ACEC of Idaho, Ellwein advocated for the business of engineering. She has been actively involved with WTS鈥� Southwest Idaho chapter and a representative on the Northwest Regional Council, promoting the advancement of women in transportation.

Beyond her professional achievements, Ellwein is deeply committed to community service. Through the HDR Foundation, she has championed local initiatives like All Kids Bike, providing 195 Strider bikes to eight kindergarten classes in Oregon and Southwest Washington over the last three years.

Tonya Finley, manager of contracts and risk management at David Evans and Associates, has spent more than 31 years advancing the architecture and engineering industry. She began her career in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, managing contracts for the Department of Energy and Department of Defense before transitioning to support consulting engineering firms in both public and private sectors.

Finley helped lead the successful passage of Oregon鈥檚 Duty to Defend legislation (SB 1575), eliminating unfair contract clauses that disproportionately impacted design professionals on public projects. The legislative victory followed four years of focused advocacy.

Active with the American Council of Engineering Companies for more than 26 years, Finley recently moved to past president for ACEC Oregon after serving nine years on the board of directors. She currently serves on the ACEC National Planning Cabinet and ACEC AASHTO Joint Committee. She also serves on the board of directors for the Clackamas County Business Alliance and represents ACEC in legislative and transportation forums. Additionally, she is a member of the National Contract Management Association and co-teaches a cardio dance fitness class for people with special needs.
