The Daily Journal of Commerce has announced its Hard Hat Safety Award honorees for 2021. The following companies, organizations, project teams and individuals are being recognized for their ongoing, successful work keeping employees and the public safe.

The honorees are:

• Chris McInroe, project director, Perlo Construction. He was nominated “for his instrumental role advancing the culture of safety at Perlo.”
• Steve Frost, site safety, health and environmental manager, Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Company. “Steve is not only a great safety leader but … an industry leader in addressing the suicide epidemic facing the building industry,” according to his nomination.
• Blake Devine, senior project manager, JE Dunn Construction. “Blake’s commitment to safety and willingness to share has added value to client relationships,” according to his nomination.
• Wyatt Fulkerson, safety manager, Portland Mechanical Contractors. “After seeing a high rate of incidents, Wyatt implemented several programs that (have) completely turned around the safety culture,” according to his nomination.
• Charlotte Hintz, head of people success, Ausland Group. She “completed substantial (work) during 2020 … through innovative measures that were focused on people not only at work but at home,” according to her nomination.
• Dennis Barlow, safety director, and the entire AGC safety team. “The team’s proactive approach and coordination with contractors helped keep Oregon contractors working safely as surrounding states shut down due to the pandemic,” according to the nomination.
• Jim Wildish (posthumous) and the Wildish team. “Jim recently passed away, but (left) a successful company that built its reputation on safety in a dangerous industry,” according to the nomination.
• Skanska USA Building Inc. The firm “issued an innovative and quick response to the pandemic,” according to the nomination.
• Portland Bureau of Development Services. The agency issued a “proactive, intentional and thorough pandemic response to keep the industry moving,” according to the nomination.
• JH Kelly LLC. The nomination sought to recognize the firm’s “general safety culture.”
• Home Forward. The agency “implemented the Cascadia earthquake emergency prep plan to respond to the pandemic, keeping workers (and tenants) safe,” according to the nomination.
• Willamette Construction Services. The nomination sought to recognize the company’s “proactive COVID response.”
• General Sheet Metal Works Inc. The nomination sought to recognize a “general safety culture that led to a successful approach to the pandemic, keeping people safe in a manufacturing shop.”
• Oregon Occupational Safety and Health. 2020 was an “unprecedented year in keeping our building community safe while having to make sure our COVID safety protocols were enforced,” the nomination stated.
• Gideon Street Overcrossing, Stacy and Witbeck (contractor), TriMet and Portland Bureau of Transportation (owners). The nomination sought to recognize “successful completion of a dangerous project for both the team and community.”
• Legacy Good Samaritan Orthopedic Surgery Inpatient Recovery Floor, Lease Crutcher Lewis (contractor), Legacy Health Systems (owner). The project team “finished a dangerous … project right when COVID hit and helped Legacy transition the space into a COVID wing as cases started to rise,” the nomination stated.
• Washington Park Reservoir Improvement, Hoffman Construction (contractor), Portland Water Bureau (owner). On this “dangerous project,” the nomination stated, the team “worked through challenges and COVID and received recognition from the client and the neighbors because of a proactive safety plan with strong communication.”

A celebration will take place online on March 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Daily Journal of Commerce has announced its Hard Hat Safety Award winners for 2020. The awards recognize companies, organizations, project teams and individuals for their ongoing, successful work keeping employees and the public safe.

This year, nominations were accepted for several categories: general contractor, specialty firm, individual safety professional/advocate, project, project owner, supplier, service provider and nonprofit dedicated to safety. After careful review of nominations, 15 winners were selected.

The honorees are: Walsh Construction (general contractor), Perlo Construction (general contractor), R&H Construction (general contractor), Lorentz Bruun Construction (general contractor), Tapani Inc. (general contractor), I&E Construction (general contractor), INLINE Commercial Construction (general contractor), MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions (specialty firm), Coffman Excavation (specialty firm), Rosendin (specialty firm), Brewery Blocks 4 Reroof (project) performed by general contractor Lease Crutcher Lewis and roofer Snyder Roofing of Oregon, Lake Oswego Large Mixed-Use (project) performed by Deacon Construction, Rick McMurry of MHA Resources (individual safety professional), John McKenzie of JE Dunn Construction (individual safety professional), and Kenneth Overton of Overton Safety (individual safety professional – lifetime achievement).

A virtual celebration will take place June 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individual tickets cost $25. Each person who registers will receive an email with event details. Then a link to the event will be sent at least one day beforehand.

The Daily Journal of Commerce on Wednesday held its inaugural Hard Hat Safety Awards event at the Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland. The awards program was started as a way to tell the stories of how local firms are prioritizing safety and finding innovative ways to reduce the number of injuries suffered by workers and the public. A total of 13 firms were honored for their safety efforts.
