Meet the 2021 Hard Hat Safety Award honorees

2021hardhatlogo-600The Daily Journal of Commerce has announced its Hard Hat Safety Award honorees for 2021. The following companies, organizations, project teams and individuals are being recognized for their ongoing, successful work keeping employees and the public safe.

The honorees are:

  • Chris McInroe, project director, Perlo Construction. He was nominated 鈥渇or his instrumental role advancing the culture of safety at Perlo.鈥
  • Steve Frost, site safety, health and environmental manager, Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty Company. 鈥淪teve is not only a great safety leader but 鈥 an industry leader in addressing the suicide epidemic facing the building industry,鈥 according to his nomination.
  • Blake Devine, senior project manager, JE Dunn Construction. 鈥淏lake鈥檚 commitment to safety and willingness to share has added value to client relationships,鈥 according to his nomination.
  • Wyatt Fulkerson, safety manager, Portland Mechanical Contractors. 鈥淎fter seeing a high rate of incidents, Wyatt implemented several programs that (have) completely turned around the safety culture,鈥 according to his nomination.
  • Charlotte Hintz, head of people success, Ausland Group. She 鈥渃ompleted substantial (work) during 2020 鈥 through innovative measures that were focused on people not only at work but at home,鈥 according to her nomination.
  • Dennis Barlow, safety director, and the entire AGC safety team. 鈥淭he team鈥檚 proactive approach and coordination with contractors helped keep Oregon contractors working safely as surrounding states shut down due to the pandemic,鈥 according to the nomination.
  • Jim Wildish (posthumous) and the Wildish team. 鈥淛im recently passed away, but (left) a successful company that built its reputation on safety in a dangerous industry,鈥 according to the nomination.
  • Skanska USA Building Inc. The firm 鈥渋ssued an innovative and quick response to the pandemic,鈥 according to the nomination.
  • Portland Bureau of Development Services. The agency issued a 鈥減roactive, intentional and thorough pandemic response to keep the industry moving,鈥 according to the nomination.
  • JH Kelly LLC. The nomination sought to recognize the firm鈥檚 鈥済eneral safety culture.鈥
  • Home Forward. The agency 鈥渋mplemented the Cascadia earthquake emergency prep plan to respond to the pandemic, keeping workers (and tenants) safe,鈥 according to the nomination.
  • Willamette Construction Services. The nomination sought to recognize the company鈥檚 鈥減roactive COVID response.鈥
  • General Sheet Metal Works Inc. The nomination sought to recognize a 鈥済eneral safety culture that led to a successful approach to the pandemic, keeping people safe in a manufacturing shop.鈥
  • Oregon Occupational Safety and Health. 2020 was an 鈥渦nprecedented year in keeping our building community safe while having to make sure our COVID safety protocols were enforced,鈥 the nomination stated.
  • Gideon Street Overcrossing, Stacy and Witbeck (contractor), TriMet and Portland Bureau of Transportation (owners). The nomination sought to recognize 鈥渟uccessful completion of a dangerous project for both the team and community.鈥
  • Legacy Good Samaritan Orthopedic Surgery Inpatient Recovery Floor, Lease Crutcher Lewis (contractor), Legacy Health Systems (owner). The project team 鈥渇inished a dangerous 鈥 project right when COVID hit and helped Legacy transition the space into a COVID wing as cases started to rise,鈥 the nomination stated.
  • Washington Park Reservoir Improvement, Hoffman Construction (contractor), Portland Water Bureau (owner). On this 鈥渄angerous project,鈥 the nomination stated, the team 鈥渨orked through challenges and COVID and received recognition from the client and the neighbors because of a proactive safety plan with strong communication.鈥

A celebration will take place online on March 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
