It started with the , the charitable wing of the Vancouver-based , which raised more than $100,000 last weekend as part on its annual Dozer Day event. In addition to teaching the nearly 25,000 people in attendance about heavy machinery, all the money will go toward local charities supporting causes centered on children.

And now the global construction firm is matching dollar-for-dollar donations through Groupon that will go toward , an organization dedicated to providing long-term support to low-income youth.

will , up to $3,000, over the next two days. The funds will help buy tools and safety equipment for kids involved in YouthBuilders’ green residential construction program, which teaches young adults between the ages of 17 and 24 about green building techniques. The and the Vancouver-based have finished the second phase of a three-phase, three-year runway improvements project at Portland International Airport.

After rehabilitating the north runway in the summer of 2009, the port had Nutter Corporation extend it from 8,000 feet to 9,825 feet over the past five months. Port officials are now in the process of laying out all the improvements that will be done to the 11,000-foot south runway next summer.

Even though the project was slow to get off the ground due to an unusually wet spring, port spokesman Steve Johnson said it was finished on time and slightly under budget. To date, the port has spent $68 million to improve and extend the north runway.

“We’ve been playing catch up all summer,” Johnson said. “But the team did a great job and we completed the project right when we originally thought we would.”

The port set the project up so that the bigger planes – cargo planes and passenger planes used for international flights – could still use the long runway while the other was extended. Now that the north runway has been completed, those planes can use it while the south runway is being rehabilitated.

The north runway officially opens this evening at which time all planes will return to their regular routes.
