The Port of Portland is starting work on the second phase of its north runway expansion project Monday. The phase will extend the runway to 9,825 feet from the current 8,000 feet.

The expansion will provide extra room for larger planes, which will use the north runway when the south runway closes for repairs next year.

is the contractor on the project. Work will run through October.

The second phase of the project will cost roughly $15 million, said Ed Hagedorn, project manager for Nutter.
