Jill Arnold of Scott Edwards Architecture has more than 24 years of industry experience, including designs of health care and community-focused facilities. She led the design and delivery of a new patient tower for Salem Hospital, completed on time and within budget during the pandemic, establishing the firm鈥檚 expertise in large-scale health care projects. Arnold recently completed a secure facility recognized as a new benchmark for residential behavioral health treatment in Oregon.

Arnold explained that she leads by example, prioritizing accessibility and clear communication while remaining open to feedback. She said she is driven by a desire to make positive community impacts and bring solace to vulnerable populations through creative, healing spaces.

A member of the American Institute of Architects, Arnold has volunteered with Girls Inc., the Oregon Food Bank and Northwest Children鈥檚 Outreach. Her work focuses on elevating design standards in health care and behavioral health facilities.

Among Susan Barnes鈥� greatest career accomplishments is leading the creation of the Serena Williams Building, the largest building at Nike鈥檚 World Headquarters in Beaverton. Over a six-year duration, she led all phases of the project鈥檚 design, documentation and construction.

Barnes, who joined Skylab in 2012 and was named a principal in 2020, also is credited with growing the firm鈥檚 residential scope of work. The number of single-family homes it has designed has increased significantly since she became the firm鈥檚 director of residential architecture.

Throughout her career Barnes has remained engaged in architectural education. At the Portland State University School of Architecture, she鈥檚 been a regular studio reviewer, participated in student portfolio reviews and delivered project presentations.

Barnes also is a leader in Skylab鈥檚 mentoring programs. She leads the technical training of all staff, running tech talks, teaching design and documentation standards, and moderating discussions on the design process. She has established the deliverables for all phases of design within the office and is actively engaged in the QA/QC of work to be issued.

Katherine Berg, a ZGF Architects partner, has spent 30 years advancing sustainable design and enriching human experience through architecture. Her portfolio spans health care, child care, corporate office, mixed-use and research projects, demonstrating innovative approaches across diverse building types.

Berg led the design of the PAE Living Building in Portland, the 35th fully certified Living Building globally, achieving profound sustainability within a developer鈥檚 financial framework. She directed an all-women team of architects and engineers for the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance, creating an elite facility celebrating women鈥檚 sports.

Her design process emphasizes deep listening and research to understand client vision, cultural influences and site context before developing solutions. This approach consistently produces resource-efficient, health-focused spaces that positively impact communities.

Berg serves as trustee for The Nature Conservancy of Oregon and advisor to the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition. She is a member of the Living Future Institute and has lectured at the University of Oregon and University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin.

Brian Cavanaugh, a principal at Huitt-Zollars, has spent 30 years advancing architecture through culturally significant projects and industry leadership. As an alumnus of the University of Oregon, Cavanaugh led the design of the Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center in collaboration with his team. The project earned five AIA design awards at local, state, regional and national levels. Cavanaugh explained the center 鈥渟tands not only as a place of gathering and support, but also as a symbol of resilience, representation, and belonging.鈥�

His leadership philosophy emphasizes collaboration and empowerment. 鈥淚 strive to foster a culture of trust, respect, and shared purpose 鈥� where creativity and innovation can flourish, and where each individual鈥檚 contributions are valued,鈥� Cavanaugh said. He remains committed to mentoring emerging professionals and developing future industry leaders.

Cavanaugh serves on the AIA Large Firm Round Table, AIA International Membership Task Force and Innovation Design Consortium, contributing to the advancement of architectural practice nationally and internationally.

Kelly Chanopas of ZGF Architects has 22 years of experience in the profession. She currently serves as a board member for NOMA PDX and co-chair of the Architecture for Health Committee, focusing her practice on health care design and collaborative research initiatives.

Chanopas has advanced equity and inclusion within the architecture industry, having chaired AIA Oregon鈥檚 Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion since 2019 after initially serving as vice-chair when it was founded in 2018. She has mentored emerging professionals through project work and professional organizations, helping them develop leadership skills and advance their careers. Chanopas explained that her leadership philosophy centers on collaboration, authenticity and adaptability, with curiosity and continual learning driving her work.

At ZGF, she has contributed to applied research in circadian lighting and health care design, working with interdisciplinary teams on projects including neonatal intensive care unit environments. She has moderated industry symposiums addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion topics within architecture.

Tami Chen is vice president/president-elect of NOMA PDX and serves as national sponsorship chair for the National Organization of Minority Architects. She received the NOMA 鈥淢ember of the Year鈥� award in 2024. At NBBJ, where she is a project architect, she works as a Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion ambassador, facilitating activities and ensuring transparent communication firmwide.

In 2023, Chen chaired the NOMA national conference planning committee in Portland, drawing over 1,500 architects of color. She led design work on the Montage Health Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health in Monterey, California, a pediatric behavioral health facility applying neuroscience research to create healing environments for patients, families and caregivers.

From 2019 to 2024, Chen served on the Portland Backpack board, including terms as vice president and president of the nonprofit that addresses food insecurity for public school students. She continues to volunteer with the organization.

Chen鈥檚 leadership philosophy centers on collaborative team dynamics, believing stronger results emerge when teams work collectively toward common goals and transform organizational potential into reality.
